I want him to do also some efforts and stay fit because I want him to be healthy and I find it very attractive.
I completely understand, the following comment is not to disagree with you, just illustrate other people's situation. There are times in one's life to actually have being attractive on one's list of expectation is not so important. Healthy is important, yes. But when your other half is trying to pull off a major work project, to make a comment about a tiny belly not being attractive can be a low blow. If the belly was obscenely giant, yes. But a little chub midsection is not killing anyone, plus is hot, I wouldn't want him to be embarrassed about it. Freelancers do not have easy life at times, though being physically active can make it easier, true. The attractiveness, I think is again a matter of taste, or being flexible with it...

Absolutely, you can like what ever you want. I don't think it's perverted at all.

But, as I pointed out in my previous post, it seems with you that it is all or nothing and you jump from people without a belly to freaks, without mentioning the norm.

Whenever anyone criticises excessive body fat on this thread (or in the U.K., or the U.S), for well publicised reasons of health, one gets hounded.
(Another poster was astounded on here when his doctor told him that he could lose a bit of weight).

If we had an honest poll on here asking all the men with a beer-belly whether they would like it to disappear, irrespective of its women-pulling ability, and without any personal sacrifice with regards to beer or food consumption, I bet the answer would be near to 100% to lose it.
They won't admit it though.
Agree with this sentiment totally, it's obvious men are jealous of other men who make the effort with regard to their body (& therefore health)...it's not just the belly as some have mentioned, man boobs, flabby arms etc. all contribute towards the unspoken statement...ie being lazy.

I have been on a diet and fitness kick for 7 months, and I do not think I have become a bigger pain in the ass than I already was.

The opposite in fact. I am a lot happier and healthier, with less mood swings. I have not gone overboard with anything, I just took it into my own hands.

Instead of whinging about it, I got up and did something. I still eat what I want on the weekends, I make myself train 3-4 times a week and I always feel better afterwards.

It is possible to find the balance.

Whilst I love the genetics argument, sometimes it would just be more effective for people to stop blaming outside forces and complaining, and give it a go.

Once you get into a routine, then everything is so much easier.
That's the difference.

I had a girlfriend once who was always beginning or ending a diet (she was never on them for very long).
Every time I ate anything, she'd cry "Oh, you are lucky, I wish I could eat that", and she'd always have the salad on the menu and moan about the fact she couldn't have anything else.
But here's the funny thing, on the way back, she'd always stop of at a garage and scoff a family-sized bag of M and Ms or something like that. Weird.

I fully agree that I - like most men - would well like to lose some kilos.

But: I strongly disagree with the "sixpack=healthy" statement:
- every doctor will tell you that being light over ideal weight is far more healthy than being underweight. (Yes, a huge belly is bad for your health, no doubt. But the other extreme easily as well.)
- I have seen and heard far too many discussions in the gym to believe that all the men who work out are "naturally" healthy - they seem to diet as badly as those anorexic girls and throw in far worse pills on top. All in order to look healthy - pretty ironic actually.

While I agree that people do not want to walk around all flabby and unhealthy, and if they dislike themselves they should do something about it. But, I guarantee you, if I see a guy (and my chick friends with me), who has a bit of flab on the arms, etc. my first thought will not be flab=lazy man. If the person is seriously out of shape and panting like a walrus, we might think that. Maybe this is the way guys automatically think about a girl with a slight chub, if that's the case that's too bad. But I wouldn't be so sure about it. But it is true if people are seriously unhealthy or unhappy with themselves, they should change it, sure. I forgot who's thread this is, if I'm wrecking your embarrassed-fat-guys-thread, sorry.

I highly doubt every doctor, or even some doctors have claimed this. In fact, calorie reduction diets have shown to lengthen the lifespans of living creatures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie_restriction

I believe it's useful to pack on a few pounds of fat beforehand if you are planning to do something like walk to the South Pole or something like that.

Anyone with a beer-belly got that kind of thing in mind?

Re: Men are embarassed by their pot bellies

I've got good reason to believe I'm somewhat more carbohydrate sensitive than most, hence the reason I have a very modest spare tyre/belly than I will probably never get rid of. It's also the reason exercise and fitness is a must for me, rather than a choice.

Having said that, I was 89kg 6 or 7 months ago. I felt unfit, had lumbar pain, and woke up feeling more tired than when I went to bed thanks to sleep apnea/snoring.

Through running, cycling, and climbing, I'm down to about 84kg (with some added benefits of muscle gain). I'm feeling fitter, sleeping better and have almost no back pain.

I'd like to get down to 76kg, although I may end up sacrificing more muscle/strength than the increased lightness would benefit me. And I'd probably still have the belly

Why? Do they have beer and cookies there?

This thread has been quite entertaining to me. As one of those "lucky" guys (with smaller balls than Tash) who can eat anything and not gain weight I cannot relate to wanting to lose a few pounds/kilos. I can't tell you though that especially with my love for food I have to watch what I eat, but for different reasons. I have to make sure my cholesterol stays in check which is something you don't think a skinny person should worry about. It's an eating disorder problem right. Wrong! Worst is if I fall ill. My body has ZERO reserves. After one or two days of being ill it's off to hospital for a drip or banana bag.

IMO a couple kilo's over what the docs say is ideal is what I call ideal. There have also been some studies which point out the connection between belly or mid-torso fat being related to heart disease (for men & women) so maybe when it really starts to show on the belly more than anywhere else it's a good time to start doing something about it.

Well thanks MC

My point about flabby arms, man tits etc was just to highlight the fact that anyone who is fit & (therefore) feels good about themselves is always going to be looking happier in most cases than someone who isn't, it kind of forces you to smile as you know other people are more interested in you, you see this on a daily basis.

It makes me happy if I am naked & see myself in the mirror too... ..it is good for your health in terms of the psychological aspect.

I would bet a lot of 'bellied-up' men don't look very often at all in the mirror.

This is true. More specifically, it is the fat around the organs that is the killer. Unfort for us Brownies, the risk of heart disease is much higher from such fat than for other ethnicities.

Jaybuz!! Seems even mother nature is a racist b!tch. You being serious though. I thought it was more regional. Amercicans, Brits, etc etc and then lowest chance of heart disease was the Japanese. Odly enough it follows general regional diets.

Scheize, it is yours, innit, sorry, my head's spinning too hard because of Tom1234 and his dietitian nurse ways...Ooops. I only teasing, and smiling, too, which does not show, hahaha...

I get your point. Self satisfaction is important, positive self image, living well in one's body is important. Good healthy ratio of weight/health and fitness definitely contributes to it, but on the other hand I have found some people not forgiving themselves a few little "blemishes" in their otherwise good image..I agree with you, though, eventhough I am not a man. On the other hand, if I had a bit of pudge, I wouldn't be depressed and I am sure my other half would work extra hard, too, to either help me get healthy again or relearn how to love myself again.

I had a weight issue since I wasn't able to put on weight at all, it was annoying since I ate like a horse, just did too many activities and didn't refuelled smartly to get my BMI over 15, it was actually scary, so I am on the Heffalump's side. Kilos sometimes save life. And I don't mean extra 50kilos, nor buckets of ice cream for dina, hahah...

Indians, esp from the North, do eat oily foods so that is a consideration. However, there is also strong genetic bias. Blacks are only slightly better than us in this regard.
