Maybe if I asked Santa Claus, I could be a part of this Swiss Fairytale too?!?!?
I thought you *were* Santa Claus. With the belly and all. You know. I'll take whisky and shortbread, please.

That's incredible!! Oh, how I wish I was Swiss and be able to spend time with the kids, or working, or doing thinks round the house and be able to do things at the weekend, instead of being stuck in this lousy restaurant all the time.

Maybe if I asked Santa Claus, I could be a part of this Swiss Fairytale too?!?!?
Sigh - they've all got young children - of course they like going to restaurants but on a very regular basis - with young children - not so much fun for them or the kids.

The ones I know don't spend all their in restaurants - they really don't have time in the week juggling children, jobs and the house and at the weekend, they'd rather be doing things with their children than sitting in restaurants.

I can't speak for the others. Perhaps they don't pig out in front of the TV in the evening with a jumbo bucket of ice cream or a tin of cookies? I've really no idea
The Swiss are the only people who go on a 3 week holiday to Italy and boast to their colleagues when they come back about how much sport (cycling, running, hiking) they achieved.
It is also socially unacceptable to be fat in Switzerland, and yes, they will judge you. Personally I think this is a good thing. I know a woman in the UK who is about three times the weight she should be (titanic), who is forever in and out of the doctor's with a long list of weight related illnesses / conditions. Incredibly, at no point has the doctor ordered / told or even politely suggested to her that she must lose weight. My first visit to the doctor's here (for a chest infection) was accompanied by a stern reprimand concerning my weight, "You must eat more salad!" Found it a bit harsh at the time, but it did get me thinking and working on losing the weight.

Cheers

Jim

Re: Men are embarassed by their pot bellies

When your girlfriend or wife says she doesn't want you to lose your belly completely, is this sometimes because they don't want you to be more attractive to other women?

I think this is probably over-conspiratorial . . . partners want each other to look attractive, right?

I know you object exaggerating, I agree with you. It is blown out of proportion a tiny bit, not much, though. But just like you have your typical person here (well, you don't, that's the thing, right) you can't say all expats are jealous binging creatures who eat litres of icecream and burgers by buckets. I have a feeling those who actually move continents and go through the pain of leaving a comfy nest, got here because they happen to have something unique to offer to a market here aren't your stereotypical white trash or people with extremely unhealthy lifestyles that give them bellies. Bellies sometimes grow because one is just too busy working on an important project, be it a newborn, wife's sickness that strains the family or a work related stuff, studying, learning a lingo, emotions, you name it...So to throw them into one box is as silly as saying all locals are gym/alpinism obsessed freaks who liken the shape of their figure to their successful career, etc. All I was trying to say, belly is not the end of the world, it does not mean one is definitely going to die of heart attack next week, and, shockingly, some consider it hot. More manly than your typical light weight whispy boy. But I get your point. I agree, people are healthier here, I'm not sure if they have more fun. The pressure to be thin is big, I don't know if that is so healthy, there has been some discussion over overdone gov's effort, now the anorexia seems to raise, I heard it on WRS when they were talking about growth of eating disorders here and body image issues, control issues, linked to recent gov campaign against being fat. It will be in WRS archives if you want to listen to it, either Health Matters or Kids in Mind.

Re: Men are embarassed by their pot bellies

my ex hated fat people with a passion. it was so extreme it was comical e.g. the escalator on the tube would be out of order and as she grumpily climbed the stairs she would comment "i bet a fat person stood on it and broke it"

anyway, she always pestered me at the slightest sign of flab on my belly and kept me on the straight and narrow (and i wear size 28 jeans!).

personally, i find a flat toned belly much more attractive on a girl than a layer of flab and i assumed it would be the same for girls re: men.

And, from the other end of the spectrum, if you don't have a belly and are normal weight, you are not necessarily:

A skinny drugged up dancer.
A fitness freak
A vegan marathon runner
A diet freak
Someone who puts themselves before their family
A fussy eater

etc etc

I would say it because in my experience, men on "diet and fitness projects" are absolutely insufferable.

Yeah, but it comes down to what is attractive for each girl. A person sabotaging other partner's health efforts is digging her own grave, of course. But if a girl doesn't mind a little bit of podge since it is hot and actually fits with her prefered bear body type, then what...Does she have to lie and say flat tummy on a grown up guy is better than some meat to hold onto?

Well, it is true that certain physical activities do make you shed calories in no time...what was is, an hour of horizontal poky, 250-300cal depending how wild you go? So, you can let yourself do some yanking watching a film, no prob. Just be discrete about it and don't let us know how it went, please.

I've seen it affect a relationship negatively. A guy I knew losing a lot of weight wreaked havoc on the "settler-settlee" power dynamic in the relationship, which was previously in favour of his girlfriend. That said, their relationship wasn't that healthy to begin with. And it goes without saying it didn't last.

Hmmmm.....nobody said that, I am glad you agree. Still, I like bellies, not giant ones, but some. I know guys who like tiny bellies on a girl, too, so I know I am not an obscure exception.

I agree--I really like a little (little) belly on girls. Women with six-packs creep me out. But that's just personal preference.

I haven't been anywhere else where it would be acceptable to make some ill taste comments about people's weight as it is here, actually. And not in private, but pretty openly. I think it's good to be healthy, and maintain a good weight, whatever it means, belly or not. But to have kids openly yell comments about fat people in front of strangers is pretty strange, not mentioning in their eyes, there is absolutely no excuse for being fat. Never. For anyone. So that was an attitude that I had to think about when I was getting adjusted here, if people are so determined to be healthy or ignorant of other issues people might have that have visible result in being over weight. And, it was not just kids, but I have heard the same attitude from grown ups as well..Mockery, all sorts of bad taste jokes, trying to "avoid" the fat person, etc.
