Good idea, but I prefer my bike and pedal like hell until I can let go......

Or quite the opposite - fall asleep on the sofa and things often look a lot better when I wake up.

Re: Stress - how do you cope with it?

nearly hit breaking point last year, did a course in meditation, 4 day course then do 20 mins 2x per day thereafter and also use this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Breathe-...8709335&sr=8-2

for pranayama, really helps.

All the best and don't let it get the better of you

Re: Stress - how do you cope with it?

I cannot cope well with stress and find it gives me chest pains that makes me even more anxious.
I am very stressed at present and find I can cope during the day but the nights are hell as your mind goes into overdrive.
I recently was reading an article that I have been trying to do, and what it suggests is that when your mind is full of thoughts that you "take them out side and hang them on a tree one by one". Bizarre as it sounds I have found that breathing in through the nose for 5 secs and then expelling air from your mouth for another 5secs and then going through a door and hanging "thoughts" on a tree and coming back to the house really seems to help.
If you are a sensitive soul stress can affect you really badly - cuddling an animal - dog or chicken helps as well.

Re: Stress - how do you cope with it?

I actually logged in to post a thread about stress and here we are, EF never fails to offer advice.

I have recently been on the edge of nervous break down, it's been so hard year since my separation, moving out, finding new apartment, finding a new job and starting to work in another canton, for a while i were always hanging out with friends, having late nights, lots of drinks, travelling to many places, but now when i started to calm down, it all came back to me, i seriously feel over loaded, very exhausted (working 14 to 16 hours a day), trying to resolve problems with my ex.....and so much more.

I seriously feel i'm going down so fast and cannot control it, i'm actually thinking to see a psychiatric very soon as i feel my life is totally going out of control.

Any further advice would be appreciated.

My life has been in a similar spiral and I also feel overloaded.
Your words sent a shiver down my spine, Mowvich.

i know all about stress as the moment. I am trying to do the following, maybe these might work for you?

1. compartmentalise each problem and try to focus on one problem at a time (even if you still need to think about 10 completely different areas each day)

2. learn to push-back. if you are being overloaded, take the time to divert some of the load before it lands on your desk or ask for some work to be re-allocated.

3. get organised, get an App (for your iPhone etc. in my case I use Things for Mac)

4. take time out. you may feel like you don't have time for this, but a little bit of down time will improve efficiency when you return to a task and might help new ideas/solutions to surface

5. spend time with good people.
I couldn`t agree with this advice more. I went through some very stressful periods over the last 3 years and it`s very often like a sort of perfect storm - with several or many problems coming together at the same time. Under normal circumstances most of them would be manageable but together - it just becomes too much, they become magnified, hence the stress.
Try to identify those issues over which you have NO control and then deal with those over which you can have some control. I always imagine the problems on a carousel and as it turns round, only 1 is accessible at any one time. Then try to prioritise them and deal with the most pressing and urgent issues first. Those that can wait, put them on the back burner.

Try to discuss with a friend - sometimes family and closest friends are not the best people for this.

Keep the problems in perspective - think what is the worst thing that can happen - normally it`s not that bad.

Nothing, I'm fortunate to have been born with a simply marvelous disposition. =p

Honestly though, I find that the gym, cooking, *censored* and techno keep me happy.

It probably sounds corny, but I count my blessings, and hug my dogs. And the rest of the family. In that order.

wtf is stress anyway?
Well, not having the luxury of a job and buying and selling houses, anyway. Even being unemployed in the west is only relatively stressful. Maybe if you're in Jenin, or Al Thawra, or Kandahar, or Kinsasha, one might be stressed. Otherwise, HTFU, as they apparently say here, and get over ones self. Why not help someone in a much worse position? One'd soon feel a lot less full of self pity...or is it self loathing? I can never tell the difference. Stop thinking about money - all that stress for some ill gotton gains, a waste of a life that's meant to be for enjoying...

Didn't she end up commiting suicide? She obviously found one problem it couldn't cure.
Yeah, life. Although I've heard of people curing that problem in a hot bath, too. Maybe that's what she meant all along...

Re: Stress - how do you cope with it?

when stressed, I used to close up like a clam and not say a word. I'd never say anything negative if I could help it. I worked like crazy and thought I just had to do it all and should never complain. I also used to feel stressed when faced with health difficulties.

Then.. one day I just let go
I let the world spin around and around and around all by itself.

I found that quiet prayer when alone, brought me solace and that I could actually talk and share a true opinion.

Now when I'm stressed or on the contrary upbeat, I'll reach out and call my closest friends without hesitating for days before picking up the phone.

Stress is truly lighter when you can share, laugh and cry with a trusted friend.

Great advice!! Always a good idea to talk to someone, especially a very trusting friend.

honestly, i have found the best way to stay as stress free as possible is to remember it can always be worse-
and to have a lot of love, sex and laughter (with a bit of yoga)
seriously, it works...

"There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them." - Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

I am a huge believer of that. A hot bath - takes time out from the madness of it all and slows the world down. One of the best piece of advice that I've learnt from my husband who is one of the calmest and least "stressy" people I know is to only stress about the things within your control, and let go of those that you cant.

His litmus test is always: "Can you do anything about it at the moment?" Yes? Do it.

No? No problem. Wait till you can do something about it, or do something in order to move things along. In the meantime, have a drink whilst waiting.
Took your advice, stayed in a hot tub for 90 min and just go out now, feel so chilled, think this could be awesome as before bed solution on daily basis....thx
