I think if you ignore it then they'll move the money to a blocked bank account. You'll be able to transfer it from there into another pension fund at a later date (or ignore it).

E.T.A. - The fact that it's only 8 month's worth might mean you can take it as cash. I seem to remember, on the form that I recently filled out to transfer my pension, something to the effect that small amounts can be withdrawn. So contact the company on the off chance. You might get some beer tokens.

It has nothing to do with health insurance.

Every month a % of your salary is deducted and allocated to a pension fund by your employer. The employer also contributes a %. There is a legal minimum for both parties, nevertheless some companies actually offer more.
Anyway.... when you leave the company that money follows you and is legally transferred from your former employer to your new employer. If you don't give them the information to make the transfer they contact you. Simples.

The money is blocked until you retire, or decide to be self-employed, buy property or leave the country to an non-European country. If you move to a European country the money the pension fund is transferred to your pension fund in that country.

The money belongs to you. Probably half has been paid by your employer up to 31.05.2010, and half was paid by you. Look at your old pay slips, every month you had a deduction for BVG and this was for your pension fund, and this is the company where your money has been placed. A similar amount was also paid in by your employer.

Now that you have another job the old BVG company needs to know where to send the funds you accumulated. This is all covered by BVG laws and you cannot change anything. Just send them the information. Maybe after a year or so you will find out more about BVG and understand the importance of this letter. Keep a copy of the letter, and the reply you send them.

Maybe you can take the letter to work on Monday and any Swiss colleague can help you fill in the form. Take a small box of chocolate as a thank you!

It really is a normal every day procedure which you should have completed in June.

Usually every January you receive a statement from your current pension fund telling you how much you have accumulated, and a projection of how much you get if you live to 65 years of age and how much your relative gets if you die.

They'll move it to a blocked account after about a year. If you hold it long enough there without claiming it (more than about 5 years), it could be a real pain to get it back.

Typically when you leave an employer you would get these forms soon after. The amount is likely non trivial, although it depends how long you were working for the old employer for and your age. If you were there for a year, are 40 years old and made more than 80000, the minimum would be probably around 5k, possibly more if your plan was above the minimum level. Getting the details of your current pension fund and sending those to the old pension fund should take you less than 2 hours, so it seems like a good deal.
