US Americans: where do you do your banking?

I'm new to Zurich and am wondering where US Americans have their checking accounts? ZKB was hesitant about giving me a bank account with all of the issues going on with the States and Swiss banks.

Just curious if any other banks are more open to Americans?

Thanks~
Lisa

CS - a little cumbersome to open the account and get going, but works fine.

Post Finance. Customer Serviceless WITH a smile, but the online banking was a breeze once I kidnapped our financial wizard in the office to walk me through the Fort Knox security level sign-on process......but that's a good thing, so not a criticism. I've been pleased with Post, and their ATMs are everywhere in Switzerland. I do like their online banking, too.

I have to give props to BCV, as I always do my currency exchange there for little to nothing, and their customer service is incredible. There may be a change in my future. Happy banking!

Re: US Americans: where do you do your banking?

Note: Maybe you should ask when they opened the account, many banks have gotten tougher on Americans. Some people may have opened an account with UBS or CS when it was still relatively easy to do so.

I tried to sign up at UBS about 3 years ago (before the mess with the USA). Even then they were wary of me and wanted me to dig up several different documents. So I went literally across the street to ZKB and they opened an account with no problem. It was very easy but they might now make you jump through hoops.

Zuger Kantonal Bank

Mind you I opened the account 6 years ago before they started cracking down on us Americans. They sent me a bunch of forms this past spring letting them show my accounts should the US govt ask (sadly I'm not hording millions )

Really? Not that I'm hording any kind of money (not counting a small fortune stuffed in my mattress), but I was actually considering a move there under the assumption that the Kantonal banks were less likely to share data with the US, given that they have no presence there... guess I should do some more research.

From what they explained to me, they are just complying with the new US/ Swiss regulations. Now what's in my safety deposit box.....

Same experience with Luzerner Kantonal Bank, except we opened our accounts 10 years ago. They still want our business, especially as our mortgage is also with them.

(also not hoarding millions)

Re: US Americans: where do you do your banking?

We opened an account with UBS within the last few months and it was relatively painless. Maybe they are more relaxed in Basel. It didn't feel that different than when opening account in the US with regards to what kind of information they required.

Re: US Americans: where do you do your banking?

I bank with UBS. Opened up my account in Zurich at Paradeplatz in December 2009, and everything seems to working okay thus far. They did move my account from Paradeplatz to the office on Bahnhofstrasse early this year, but I never go there anyway, because I do most of my banking online. I like the fact that they have online banking in English, because I don't understand German.

They did specify that as an American, I could only open up a basic checking, savings account, and Pillar 3a, and not invest any money (but I suppose that would be the same wherever you go in Switzerland).
