2009 Swiss tax in Zurich

I moved to Zurich in 2009 and live in the city. I am above the 120k filing threshold if you do a pro-rated salary for 2009 (I am under 120k as I was only here for a few months for 2009, but my annualized salary > 120k). My Swiss accountant told me that I am not required to file a tax return until I receive official notification from the authority here. He said that when I receive the official notification, I will have 30 days to submit my tax return.

A friend of mine lives in the city of Zurich who also moved to Switzerland from abroad in 2009 hasn't received the official tax filing request yet, either. Is this normal? Could they possibly have missed me or is the city of Zurich just slow? I know people who moved here in 2009 but live in other parts of Kanton Zurich and all of them have received the letter to file the tax return.

My Swiss accountant said that there's nothing to worry about and we can discuss more in case I receive a request for my 2010 tax return before I received anything for 2009. Anyone else moved here in 2009 and didn't receive a request for tax filing?

If I remember correctly it took them 2 or 3 years to send me the first form.

Anyway this year/last year they seem to be completely bogged down in Zürich - I sent them my completed return in August but no reaction yet.

If your tax adviser thinks you have been over charged tax, you can always get the form, complete it and send it in. Either way the sooner you tell them the full story for 2009 the sooner you will know how much is to be paid or repaid. Probably best to follow the advice of your tax adviser and save enough for an eventual bill.
