Taxes in Olten vs Zurich

Hello,

I have been living in Zurich for years but now I am considering moving to Olten. The first reason is that I found a job there. Checking the flats price/quality there is not excuse. Olten is much better. And still 30min from Zurich by train so I can always enjoy the "big" city.
I have a question regarding the taxes. I heard that living in Olten means more taxes. What that means? taxes from my salary? how much they will be?
I appreciate any help-advice in these matter.

Thank you,

seyon

Re: Taxes in Olten vs Zurich

You should play with the several calculators linked on the 'Cost Of Living' thread stickied at the top of the Daily Life section:

Cost of living - help needed to get it right

In general, yes - Olten taxes are higher than Zürich.

How much higher will depend on your individual circumstances: taxed at source or filing, married or single, children or not, religion or not, gazillionaire or not.

Yep, every County has it's own rule and % to calculate taxes. I just know I never would wanted to live in the county of Bern. Not because of the country-side, taxes are really high there. But in Olten you have more Holidays as you will work in the county of Solothurn

Just moved from Olten to Zurich, 5% tax decrease for me :-D

That wasn't the reason I moved tho, Olten is dead!!! I have met more friends in the 7 weeks I have been in Zurich than the 1.5 years I was in Olten.

Olten is only a 30min train journey to my Zurich friends so I guess I can keep the social life back in Zurich with no problem.

I will be working in Olten pretty soon. Are there no pubs to go to in the evening? I was thinking about moving there from Zug.

Re: Taxes in Olten vs Zurich

Live in Zofingen...less than 10 minutes for Olten. Moving in between Zurich and Baden by March 1st. I can't wait to have a social life again! Boring here..few English speakers...last train to come home on the weekends is 1:00am from Zurich..if you miss that one, hope you have friends to stay with.

Re: Taxes in Olten vs Zurich

I guess each person look like for something different. I love Zuerich but I hate my flat here. And finding a good and reasonable price flat in Zurich is imposible. In Olten I can have much better appartment for less money and I have a car so I do not mind about the last train.
Now I live 5 min from HB Zurich, of course will be a bit more difficult to come to town but still possible.

Re: Taxes in Olten vs Zurich

Here is a little summary for people thinking of moving here. It can be a real time and money saver as things generally don't cost as much here. Everything is pretty much walking distance and therefore, you wouldn't have to commute. A real downer is the social life as there just isn't any. A big advantage is that you can easily hop on a train and be in either Bern, Zurich, Luzern, Basel within half an hour. Food wise they got a mean Indian lunch buffet, a half decent wings and burger place, McD's and 2 Michelin Star restaurants (in the vicitiny). There are also 2 -3 bars nothing major...mostly frequented by the gel hair crowd. There are also a couple of gyms and a hockey team which is not doing too bad. A real issue here is the wheather....it's worse than Zurich, there just is never any sunshine.

Health insurance rates are worth looking into. In Kanton Aargau we pay less than in Kt. Zürich.

I wouldn't move until you are sure you like the job and the probation period is over. You might also want to check out Baden - shorter commute to Zürich than Olten and lots of expats, in case you don't want to go into Zürich all the time.
