Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

I just got a letter for tax year 2009 from the Kanton and I have no clue what it is. My german is conversational and Google Translate just isnt cutting it this time.

The letter is called

Direkte Bundessteurer
Verrechnungsantrag Quellensteurer

I know it has something to do with the withholding tax but I am not quite sure I understand it. Has anyone ever gotten one of these ?

There is a total amount under
Verrechnungsanspruch 2009....................

and then some text telling me it is info only, I dont need to pay, I will get more information.

Any ideas ? I can put the whole text up but thought someone else might have gotten the same thing.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

It sounds like your final tax calculation for 2009. They will send the bill separately.

I received one for 2009 in late 2010. It was Canton Zug though.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

Sorry to bump an old thread, but it was the only one I could find that applies to my situation.

Got one of these letters today, but the amount written on it is like double the amount of what my accountant told me I'd have to pay after he filled in all tax forms. Is that normal?

I think you have 15 days to challenge the decision else it is binding. There is usually the number of the person that has assessed your situation. If you disagree you could or your accountant could call him / her.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

Thanks. I will discuss this with my accountant, because it seems a bit odd to me (since he didn't fill in more than the usual deductions like public transport, lunch, etc).
The back of the letter states that I have 30 days to challenge this.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

I got the same letter and is 9 times what my tax advisor said it should be after looking at the assessment I got from the tax authorities a few weeks back

Really wonder how it could be so different from the assessment.

Anspruch sounds more like you get something back though... but don't want to raise too much hope

An Anspruch is your challenge against the tax bill. I've done this once and they deducted what I found wrong then removed a deduction I shouldn't have got - and they taxed me even more

We received one of those letters where the amount was many times more than what we expected to pay. Turns out someone at the Steueramt mistakenly added an extra zero onto my husband's income. They simply sent us a new bill, which was just about what we were expecting it to be.

As others have mentioned, speak with your local Steueramt. My experience has been that the folks at the local tax department are very helpful.

My experience here is swiss romande is that they are 10x worse than the IRS. Give you the run-around, make erronous calculations, and tell you to basically stuff it, all in not so nice wording.

Anspruch means claim

But it is not clear whether they claim something from CB1 or CB1 is given the chance to claim something from them...

For what it's worth,

I got clarification from the tax advisor that the amount on this letter includes the tax that I have already paid as Quellensteurer and I don't need to do anything until I get an invoice for the remaining amount.

That sounds more like it.

I got called in for a tax review once, laid everything on the table. The Tax Kommissar was so surprised I that I was so open with everything, said my declaration was fine, then went into it to see where I could pay even less. Nice guy.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

To avoid me having to pay another CHF 65 for a two-mail email conversation with my accountant, I'm trying my luck here.

As posted earlier, I received a similar Bundessteuer (2009) letter in June. Although the amount that was initially stated on the letter got me a bit scared, the final calculation that I received last week was set to CHF 0 again (turned out I paid all Quellensteuer).

However, the tax declaration statement my accountant gave me also states the Nettosteuerschuld Kanton und Gemeinde (a minus amount, since I paid more in advance than I owe them). Will that be processed seperately? I should get some of that money back, but haven't heard anything about it yet.

You will get the money back but it takes a while - at least one year or maybe 3!
But you do get interest on the late refund; around 2% so more than a bank account & it is tax free.

Thanks. I assume this will be processed automatically, and I don't have to file a separate request for refund?

In ZH I receive tax refunds anytime from August to December after filing my tax return.

You can go to the tax office & ask for a refund at any time until the final bill is calculated.

I have used them as a high interest tax free bank account in the past, also reduces your liability to wealth tax LOL.

Re: Letter from the Kanton_ Please help !

Just to double check, but you are also talking about the refund of the Kanton / Gemeinde tax, and not the Bundessteuer, right?
