Which airline flight are you on to JFK?

The best rates are probably achieved by transfering a bank balance with www.PayPal.com

The maximum cash allowed is $10,000

Perhaps someone with more time can check this....but if you're talking cash that's not in drug dealer amounts I would be pretty confident you could get a better rate from a bank over here. The US tends not to be set up to handle foreign.

The airport is the absolute WORST place in ANY city in the world to change money. You will get the worst/least advantageous exchange rate because you are a captive audience there. Only do it in an emergency.

I have never seen favorable exchange rates in the banks in NYC/US either.

You will get the best exchange rate by using a bank card/ATM card for cash and a credit card for purchases.

Note, if you bring in or take out from the US over $10,000 in currency,
you have to declare it to customs.

Good advice - but don't use a credit card in an ATM for cash withdrawals, though, as interest is charged on a daily basis.

On a side issue, are you travelling light? ... do you have any reserve luggage allowance, available?

Need to send a piece of luggage (full) to US! HELP!

Re: Converting CHF to USD - where can I do it at JFK ?

I agree with what most of the other posters have said here. I would not change cash in the airport if I could avoid it. Change it at your Swiss bank before leaving. Only take a relatively small quantity for such things as purchasing small items, tips etc and add a bit more as I always find I spend more of the small stuff than I budget. Take it all in low denomination notes as US traders are not really set up to handle big notes in the way the Swiss ones are. The US is very much a credit card culture so use your credit card for any larger purchases including restaurant bills, hotels etc. You will get a better exchange rate than any money changer can offer you. If you have more than one credit card, take them both as in my experinece glitches will sometimes occur that prevent credit cards from working for no understandable reason.

Re: Converting CHF to USD - where can I do it at JFK ?

If you are stuck needing to change cash as I recently was, the rates I found recently were

1.098 from xe.com

0.976 Travelex at Zurich airport
0.935 Travelex at EWR
1.025 Citibank in NYC

So to echo everyone else, avoid the airports!

XE offer middle market rates. That's why it's usually higher than the typical buy rate and lower than the typical sell rate.
