PostFinance, you do not need to be resident.

Re: Opening a savings account in Switzerland?

The banking branch of the post office. In theory you can open an account at any post office ... if you are not a resident the local post office may be confused so I would suggest going to a PostFinance office. In Geneva try the Rue du Mont Blanc office.

Postfinance

http://www.postfinance.ch/

This is the bank operated by the Post office.

All I needed was my passport. (and perhaps a copy of my registration at the Einwohnersamt - I do not remember anymore)
I walked into a post office and asked to open an account. As easy as that. I did not need to deposit any money either.

Have fun!

This is incompletely incorrect.

You are eligible to open an account at Postfinance if you meet one or more of the following conditions:

1. you have a Swiss residence permit/reside in CH as a Swiss (irrespective of duration)
2. you can supply an address/residence in a neighbouring country (Austria,Germany,France,Liechtenstein,Italy, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra etc.) if not Swiss resident (may reduce product availability)
3. you are of the minimum age (product/status dependent eg 12+, -30, 60+ etc.)
4. you are the beneficial owner of the account(s) you want to open
5. you have no more than 10 accounts
6. you are not a citizen or resident of a country where UBS/Postfinance have Policy restrictions on providing service due to Tax requirements in your country of citizenship/residence.
7. You are in compliance with the General Terms and Conditions here: https://www.postfinance.ch/content/d..._gtc_sc_en.pdf

This has meant for example the account opened in Geneva by Julian Assange for his Swiss wikileaks address was subaequently closed as he wasn't a resident (although he may have been eligible to open one on behalf of an non-personal entity if wikileaks was a registered club, association, company registered in Switzerland etc.).

It also means non-Swiss can open an account if they are resident in CH or a neighbouring country subject to product policies.

It also can mean Postfinance/UBS-dependent products are withdrawn both to US citizens/residents living in CH/neighbouring countries. They can also be withdrawn from Swiss citizens resident in the USA!

This or a combination of the above may be the reason for the response to received. What in the above eligibility/disqualification criteria above apply to you?

Re: Opening a savings account in Switzerland?

But that's the thing.... are you resident in CH or are you on a visit visa? What permit do you have?

I am not sure if you can open an account while visiting!

Which post office did you go to? There is the big one near Cornavin, I think they should be able to deal with foreigners and bank accounts on daily basis..

Re: Opening a savings account in Switzerland?

From my own experience, a visitor can't open an account in switzerland, unless you have a lot, lot of money...

I had to wait until I got my permit B to open a (very) basic account in migros bank, and then I can't even withdraw money from non-migros atm...They said I need to receive a regular salary into the account before they give me a visa...

Kinda sux. I planned to go to CH to open an account but I cannot. Reply from PostFinance:

Thank you for your interest in our services. PostFinance is primarily a national provider of financial services which focuses on the Swiss market and those of neighbouring countries. For business-policy reasons, we do not offer our services beyond these geographical limits and are therefore unable to open an account for you.
Do you have any other suggestion? I am not a great fan of opening an account at UBS because it requires a lot (well at least to me) of money.
