bank secrecy & taxes

I have been working in Cern for a few years, and as most of my colleagues, I have not done any tax return (this is normal, except people that have other earning or own properties). I have a bank account at UBS and one at La Poste.
Then I get divorced in court.
With my surprise, after a few months I get a letter from the Geneva tax office, saying that I have to pay taxes. Very kindly they calculate the taxes for me based on the salary that I put on my divorce papers and BASED on the capital that I have on my account at La Poste.

I start a paperwork battle, where I try to prove that I am tax-exempt. This has been going on for over a year, and it is taking many letters, faxes, phone calls (waiting on busy lines). They say they are analysing the case, but - as I am in they system - they keep sending me new bills.

The interesting thing is that they got information from La Poste but not from UBS, about my accounts.
Can anybody comment on that ?

I've told them about your UBS account now, don't worry...

Re: bank secrecy & taxes

There is bank secrecy here, but they can get records from elsewhere if any of your accounts are connected - for example from Cern if the pay your salary into your Post account.

Re: bank secrecy & taxes

Only parts of the bank secrecy apply to Postfinance - they are not a bank.
Postfinance got away without any penalty despite having made public that Julian Assange was a customer.

Depending on your contract at Cern and whether or not you've worked elsewhere, you would typically be exempt from tax if Cern classifies you as an international civil servant. Typcially the HR office should be able to give you an 'attestation' to this effect. This should be submitted to Geneva tax authorities and resolve the issue. In case your situation is different to the above, you may indeed be subject to tax.

Hi,
you work at CERN then make some kind of fancy powerful device and blow the suck3rs off

Or make that "underground powerfull thing" blows- hey we all make mistake at work

ok, ok, it's not civilized- Well take patience that's probably the most powerful weapon in your case. (provided you've done some letters with recorded delivery already)
