Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

Hi,

I'll be coming to Zürich for a few months. I'm planning to use the credit card from my home country for spends here. Could you tell me, whether the card should be of CHIP&PIN / EMV type to be readily used in Switzerland?

Are the magnetic swipe based cards (which require signature of card holder) commonly accepted? I'm concerned with daily use in stores, stations, shops, etc. and not necessarily ATM withdrawal?

Cheers!

A lot of Swiss credit cards still need to be swiped rather than use chip & pin.

Re: Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

Whichever type your card is in your country of origin (the cards country of issue), it will be the same here in CH.
e.g. my UK issued c.c. is chip & PIN, and on the odd occasion I use it here I must also enter my PIN.
My CH issued cards just require swipe and signature (I believe this would also be true if used in another country, but can't remember/confirm for definite).

The cards usage status doesn't normally change from what it normally is.

Re: Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

Actually, I have the option of taking both kinds: with & without 'chip & PIN' in my home country. Thats why I want to know which type should I bring here that would work at all places in Switzerland.

In UK, I faced problem when some shops didn't have the facility to accept swipe-only cards.

That shouldn't be a problem here.
Chip and PIN are obviously more secure.

Maybe hedge your bets and get one of each type.

I personally have one that I use purely for on-line purchases (which are in-frequent), but when the statement/bill comes it is (would be) apparently obvious if there was a security breach or on-line fraud.

I suggest that you bring both. Chip and pin is obviously the fastest to deal with in shops, but as the signing optioin is also available, bring that one to keep for unforseen emergencies ( such as losing the first one, or having it gobbled by a bank machine.)

NB: DO let your bank know that you are in Switzerland, in case your bank/ credit card provider has "heightened security systems" ( as does my bank ) and put a block on the card when you are least expecting it.

Re: Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

So, can I conclude the following:

1) Cards without 'Chip & PIN' that need signature are accepted at all places. (Provided they honour MasterCard/Visa affiliation)

2) Merchants in Switzerland won't decline a card just because it doesn't support 'chip & PIN' facility. Everyone accepts 'swipe & sign'.

Re: Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

More or less, I could not use my Swiss issued swipe card in one place as the readers had been upgraded to the chip only type but that has been one isolated case for me. I also think that the swipe cards will be being phased out, my bank recently informed me that all of their credit cards will be replaced with chip & pin over the next year or so.

Re: Non Chip & Pin Cards accepted in Schweiz?

I don't know if they followeed up with it, but a few years ago Shell garages put up signs saying that in the next few weeks they would start to refuse cards without a PIN.
