Seconded to Zurich for 18 months - Visa & Canton Tax Qn

Hi - I'm going to be based in Zurich for 12-18 months with work. But I will still be getting paid through my home company (in Ireland). So I will be in the Irish tax system. Basically, just working from Zurich not Ireland.

I've looked into a lot of forums but just can't still get my head right, on 3 things about my circumstance. Any help is much appreciated!

1) B Visa - if I am working for a period like this, even though I am not employed by a swiss company will I need a B visa? I think I do need a visa, but just to be sure

2) Canton Taxes - if I am renting accomodation do I need to pay a local / canton tax, or is this only if I am part of the Swiss tax system? I think I wouldn't have any swiss tax obligations as I am paying tax in Ireland, but just to be sure this applies to local taxes too etc

3) Health Insurance - what I am reading says I would need Swiss health insurance, would this sound right?

Thanks for the help!
K

This is a jurisdiction question which depends on many variables. I would seek professional help outside of all the opinions that are provided from evening bar conversations on this forum.
Your company should provide this in the package unless you are only going to be "home-office" here.

hi - understand what you're saying. Not looking for legally binding advice, just the opinion of others. Will contact an expert before I do it.

So are others workign (seconded) for a prolonged period here without a visa (EU citizens) and also how can you be eligible to pay canton tax, if you are not in the Swiss tax system

Thanks

Re: Seconded to Zurich for 18 months - Visa & Canton Tax Qn

If you live and work in Switzerland for a period longer than 6 months, you will have Swiss tax liability regardless of where you're being paid. I was once seconded to Zurich for 7 months and my paychecks were coming from the US. This makes no difference.

And yep, you will need to buy health insurance if you are here for a period longer than 3 months.

Assuming that you are a EU citizen (from Ireland), then yes, you will (or should) get a B permit.

Re: Seconded to Zurich for 18 months - Visa & Canton Tax Qn

Hi - think it depends on the countries. There is a double taxation treaty between ireland and switzerland, so are only liable in 1 of these places. By default I am in the Irish tax sytem, unless (in a rolling 2 years) I spend < 240 days there. But my default is Ireland. So I wouldn't be also in the Swiss tax system, due to this 2 way treaty as far as I know.

You can just read the double tax treaty for yourself:

hi - I'm prety happy with how that works, have been through an accountant with it. My question is really about local (maybe even canton?) taxes. Do these apply if you rent in an area, or just if you rent in an area AND are in teh swiss tax system. think the later, but just to be sure really

Re: Seconded to Zurich for 18 months - Visa & Canton Tax Qn

If you are seconded by the company for whom you work in Ireland - remain on an irish contract, continue to be paid in ireland YOU shouldn't have to do anything.

Your company SHOULD be dealing with any of the issues that arise from tax neutralisation. IE if, because of your secondment, you would become liable for Swiss tax - the company will ensure your wages are uneffected.

It is hugely complicated and not helped by the diverse categorisation of what constitutes being in a country. Possibilities include:
1) Overnight stay
2) Majority of the day
3) Working days only
4) Any part of the day

yeah - I think I'm with you on this. Thanks for help

About the visa - would I need a B permit to work here for that long, even if I am seconded / on irish payroll still?

If you're asking a general question about local (town) and cantonal taxes; they are collected by the town/city you live in, along with your federal taxes, so your employer / accountant should take care of those too.

There is no direct equivalent of the UK's council tax, though they do charge a lot for bin bags.

Re: Seconded to Zurich for 18 months - Visa & Canton Tax Qn

understand - so if I'm not in the tax system (eg still paying in Ireland etc) I won't prob have any local taxes to pay, as they are for residents only, not tennants / occupiers.

thanks for help!

Hi

I am curious to see how this worked out for you. I am to do a 6 month secondment in Basel from Ireland and have queries myself regarding taxation and health insurance as I will be paid through my Irish employer.

Thanks!
