Credit card cash advance

Hello,

Sorry I've missed the formal introduction. I'm from Canada and started working here two weeks ago. I managed to find an apartment, and will need to provide them with 3 months rent as deposit, what I was wondering was if I can use my credit cards for a cash advance here, and more importantly what the actual mechanics of doing that are. I.E. where do I go and what do I do to get the advance, I don't think I ever set up a PIN on my cards, so I don't think I can just use a bank machine. Many thanks!

Re: Credit card cash advance

Hi,

to advance cash from the credit card would cost you a lot of money.
I recommend you to approach www.swisscaution.ch. They will grant your landlord the amount of your deposit against an annual premium (normally around 250 CHF per year). It works like an insurance company.

Cheers
Max

Re: Credit card cash advance

Thanks Max, perhaps a few more details are pertinent, I have money in my Canadian bank accounts, so I would post payment to the credit cards likely before I took the cash advances, so I wouldn't end up paying any interest. I didn't set up a money transfer ahead of time, and I don't think I can transfer from my bank now without seeing them in person, so I'm planning on using this really as just a slightly ineffecient way of transferring the funds. I could write myself a cheque, but it's almost too late for that because I think it would take atleast a week to completely clear.

Re: Credit card cash advance

you can get cash advances by walking into a bank and presenting card and ID at the counter. You may pay slightly higher processing fees but it should be possible.

Try the big UBS or CS branches.

I tried Credit Suisse, UBS and ZKB when I needed a credit card cash advance back in May, they all said NEIN (English: no). The fee for this is typically about 3% of the advance amount.

With a PIN you can draw cash from ATM's using your credit card. Fees are lower.

Your mileage may vary.

Re: Credit card cash advance

Just to give the story conclusion, I was off work a little late today so went to the central railway station, the currency exchange could do the advance, and offhand the rate they gave looks ok
