Trip to USA

HI,

I was wondering what is the best way to handle 21 days in California travelling around, without ending up without cash or by paying too much exchange rates charges.

I was thinking to bring:

1. my VISA PostFinance that asks only 0.9% for exchange rate.
2. 3000 US$ cash
3. anothe VISA card maybe in case the first one drops...

What do you suggest?

Thanks
Giulio.

Re: Trip to USA

1. 300 US-$ in Cash
2. 700 US-S in Travellers Cheques(5x20 and 6x100 Dollars), to back up your cash (change at post offices or American Express branches).
3 . Your Visa Card

Re: Trip to USA

I would take :

1. my VISA card plus
2. 1000 US$ cash
3. another VISA card as a back-up.

almost everywhere in California takes VISA.

Of course, the more cash you take the higher the risk of losing it or having it stolen. But it is more convenient in smaller places.

Don't forget to hunt around for a good exchange rate for the cash.

At the same time, the CHF/USD exchange rate is so good at the moment that you don't need to worry too much re the comparative cost of cash versus credit card.

Re: Trip to USA

We take our visa card and our maestro. We take money out of the wall at ATM's with the maestro - maybe $300 at a time or more, pay for things with cash when we can, and use the visa otherwise for big purchases. But cash is risky to carry around in big chunks.

There are places where you can use the maestro to pay, sometimes. Also check at hotels and such as another poster said - you might be able to pay in CHF. Traveler's checks are a pain in the butt, IMHO.

Have fun.
