Tax filing status when separated and spouse in another country

I am separated with two kids and will be moving to Switzerland. The separation is amicable and there is no documentation or agreement, but I intend on providing support for my wife and kids. I'm not sure if I can file as married, single income with 2 kids, or if I would be considered single? Anyone have any knowledge or experience with a situation like this? I think I remember reading somewhere that alimony is tax deductible but I don't know if this would be the case if separated.

Re: Tax filing status when separated and spouse in another country

You need to get a formal separation agreement signed and sealed by the British Court, include the names of your wife and 2 children (and dates of birth), with the amounts you will be paying per month.

Make the tax free maximum payment to the children, and the rest to the wife. You will then get tax relief on all the money you send, which you can claim the following year, and before the end of March, ie claim for 2011 before 15th March 2012 (Date is for Berne).

If you pay only the wife she will have to pay UK tax on most of it, but this way the children can claim their full tax allowance too, and reduce the total tax bill.

Titan, This may depend where in Switzerland you end up living. For me my partner is still in the UK with our children (we are still together just living in different countries), When I tried to change my tax to someone with children I was told it was not possible as they do not live here, however, the tax office proposed a solution to this that any money I sent back to the UK to cover bills etc should be sent back under a bank transfer with a heading of maintenance. They then said just claim this amount back in the annual tax return. They have not asked for any formal documentation etc so as previously stated it may depend on where you end up but if I were you I would just give the tax office a ring and explain your situation as see what they say.
