withholding taxes changing everymonth

Hello,

I read everything I found online and in the forum about withholding taxes and I still do not understand my case...

I started in february working in a company in canton solothurn, I was living in Zurich. They took the first month 10.6% of withholding taxes from my salary. Next month I was taken 9.92%, in April they deducted 9.31% and in addition another almost 300CHF for adjustment of withholding taxes. In may 9.43% and this month 14.14% and another 800CHF additionals of another adjustment!!

I do not understand anything. I asked to HR and the only answer was that I moved in february from Zurich to Olten and they have to adjust now (I moved in March)....they did not tell me anything about the 1st adjustment. I am so lost!

Why everymonth is this % diferent?
Why in my previous job did I not pay this taxes?

I hope you can give me some info/explanation

Re: withholding taxes changing everymonth

Could be more of an accounting issue rather than a taxation one... deductions usually fluctuate a little from month to month.

Are you on a fixed salary, or does it too vary from month to month? If so, then expect the tax rate to continue varying like this. The first two years I was over here was on a contract, with pay being based on hours worked, and it was clear that the higher the money, the higher the tax rate. I recall one time when, due to holidays one month and a five-week month with lots of overtime the next, my rate of tax changed from 5% to 26% between two successive payslips.

You mentioned something about the estimated cost of your business car being different every month. Well, surely, this is a taxable benefit, so you tax each month would therefore be different? i.e increased earnings = increased tax.

But, realistically, the only proper explanation you will get for the variations is from the people who prepare your pay and not from this forum.

Would strongly recommend you ask them.

And of course, if you submit a tax return each year, then these variations will be equalled out then anyway.

it does if the amount you are getting paid changes. Like for a bonus or some other reason...

Re: withholding taxes changing everymonth

I change nothing. Same sex, same address, same husband, same everything.

If my salary is XYZ, and the withholding tax depending of my situation is 10%. It should be 10% everything month! not 8% a month, 10% another month and 12% another month!!!!! My HR said "It is like that" no more explanation...Should I escalate this within my company?

I am asking here first because I don't want to look stupid complaining for something that is normal.

10 or 12 % a month as a second earner sounds very low, is this a 20% job or something?

the car difference was only the last 2 months. And this withholding % fluctuation is since 1 year...

how am I to know you are not an idiot? The tones of your posts don't show you in a favorable light. BTW, I am not the OP, I was just offering a reason as to why the amount could be different as I don't know the OP situation, and I know our amounts change from month to month sometimes due to ESPP or whatever else has popped up.

Is your GROSS pay and benefits(ie the car for business use the same each month? If yes, your tax should be the same each month. If not, ask your HR for an explanation.
