Re: How do you get a Swiss credit card?

The BEKB gave me one after two months, the BLKB issued one faster, waited two weeks, but they asked for a 10,000CHF deposit.

I find the Kantonalbanken way more friendly and customer-oriented, also it has never been a problem to use the machine to count the coins

Re: How do you get a Swiss credit card?

If you have an address and a permit and a contract you can open an account with UBS no problem and get a VISA or MASTERCARD.

I heard Corner Bank is not so strict about giving credit cards.

Re: How do you get a Swiss credit card?

When I opened my UBS account they virtually insisted I have a credit card - what was quite funny was when my wife opened her account (before me and she earns more), they said the 'classic' card was ideal for her.

When I opened mine, they didn't even mention the classic, it was 'gold' card all the way..... and the quote was 'imagine if your wife wants something - you can pay for it now,....'

LOL!

Yes just go to one of the counters with your passport and Swiss permit. You must buy the "Half Fare card" http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and...ravelcard.html
I went to get my Half Fare Card yesterday and wanted a pre-paid to go with it but the counter said I cannot have one until I domicile here for 6 months. Has anyone heard of this please?

Don't you live in Switzerland yet? You have to.
I have this credit card (half fare) and it's good.

You pay 135CHF every year for the "half fare" function and the credit card function is free. I would apply for the normal credit card without prepaid. It costs the same and you can pay the bills when you receive the briefs...

I do not understand the need of a credit card for buying tickets.

You have pounds, euros, whatever when buying.

I live in switzerland and buy the tickets with a portugueses credit card in euros.

I do.. and I done my registration as well, that is why I did not understand when I asked about it at the count and they said I cannot have a credit card for 6 months. I have the half card being posted to me, so are you saying that is double up as a pre-paid as well?

I can use my UK ones as well but you are at the mercy of currency rate of your card issuer. If you get paid in CHF then you should use that ready money for every day things. The bank has already made enough money out of us as it is!

Sorry. I wasn´t understanding your need.
But notice 1 thing:

Trasferring for SEPA systems (almost all european) costs 0,30 francs. Really. 1/3 of a franc.

And you can choose the day you wanna transfer (i transferred last tuesday with 0,83 for Euro).

But now i understand the need of credit. I have many accounts and i want the credit cards bills only charged in Portuguese account to control everything.

I never thought using the credit card to spent the salary because from here i transfer for Portuguese (where i have all bills back home), saving accounts in Switzerland or i withdraw.

Re: How do you get a Swiss credit card?

After being turned down for a card at Credit Suisse, I joined Post
Bank and received one immediately with a 10K limit.

I also got a credit card when I bought my halbtax card from the SBB. ( not a "prepaid" debit card.) BUying the train card was actually discounted when sigingon for the credit card
Thanks to the advice of everyone here, I applied for a SBB credit card couple of weeks ago; they took my old half card and gave me a temp one and said I would either get a credit card or a prepaid card. Visa Credit card/half card arrived yesterday, which I believe must be a credit card, even though I couldn't read all the fine prints in German, but I did see the figure of 5000 CHF which I guess must be my credit limit.

Meanwhile, my bank (CS) have said they can give me a credit card if I have the equivalent credit amount and a bit more in my account- not sure if I need that now...

I applied for mine last Wednesday at the SBB counter and was starting to worry they won't approve it. I'll table my worries for another week or so now.

I only got a 2000 CHF limit on SBB card, I have to front load it before I head back to the UK or elsewhere. I keep meaning to get rid of my UBS ones as they cost too much.
