Duty on parcel from US

Does anybody know from what declared value I will have to pay tax/duty on a parcel I am receiving. The parcel is being sent from the US.

It's about CHF 60.

If books, and it's identified as "books", then about CHF 200. (2.5% tax)

I think the post must have a website with this info.

Re: Duty on parcel from US

It's the amount, for which the calculated tax does not exceed 5 CHF.

With the current 8% mwst, this calculates to 62.5 CHF. For the reduced tariff of 2.5% (books), it's 200 CHF.

Normally they will take the declared value for calculation, but if it is exceeded then tax is calculated for the total of value+shipping.

The processing fees amount to 18 CHF if the value is below 500 CHF, and 35 CHF if above (or if it's an EMS shippment). Inspection is 6 CHF extra, but they will charge it only if the value declaration is missing or is incorrect.

Re: Duty on parcel from US

And just a friendly reminder, the ~60CHF amount is the declared value of the item PLUS postage!

so, if the cost of postage for the parcel was rather expensive, there's very little way to avoid duties.

Thanks for all your replies.

Paying money wasn't my biggest concern. It's more about having to take a break from the EF ... er .. my work ... and go to the post office to pick it up. I was hoping the postman might leave it in my letterbox, but that's not going to happen.

I recently saw this website:
http://www.lieferadresse-konstanz.de/english/index.html

if you live near Konstanz it might be worthwhile - you have your items delivered here and then you can pick them up. Completely avoiding the swiss postal system.

What about German taxes, which is more than double the Swiss ones? Unless it is offset by much cheaper admin costs?

That's only useful if the parcel is coming from the EU, which in OP's case, it's not.

Hmm, sorry about that - clearly didn't think that one through.
