Customs on laptop shipped to tourist from USA

Hello,

I'm vacationing in Switzerland this summer, while I usually live in Belgium as a student. It will be another year before I fly back to the US, and I need a new laptop before then. It was so much cheaper to buy this laptop in the US than to buy the same model either in Switzerland or Belgium, since most of my money is in USD.

I have purchased a laptop from the US and had it shipped to a generous friend, who has agreed to ship it over here to Switzerland before my vacation is over.

As far as I can tell, it looks like I'll be paying the 7.6% VAT and a 26CHF fee for customs clearance.

Is that all I have to pay? It seems quite cheap, considering I'd have to pay either 12 or 21% VAT in Belgium.

And, how should my friend fill-out the customs form in the US? He will declare the value I paid for the machine, but I wonder if he also needs to include the invoice from the manufacturer?

And since I'm a tourist who will be leaving Switzerland in about a month, does that make a difference on how customs will calculate my fees?

Thanks for any advice!

Thomas

Re: Customs on laptop shipped to tourist from USA

Thats about right for the tax, the customs just want their money!
The tax value is cost plus shipping, declairing the correct value + supplying the recipt will prevent the customs from making up their own value which they might do if they thought it was undervalued.
