Education - Tax

Hi All,

I am a non EU citizen working in a IT firm (permanent position) in Basel. I intend to do my Part-time MBA (attending the classes on weekends) in Zurich and will be paying the fees from my pocket (close to 35K CHF for the course).

In this regard, I would like to know, is it possible to get some tax exemption, since I am paying for my education ? if so, can you please let me know the % of exemption ?

Thanks in Advance,

Cheers,
IluvSwiss

Re: Education - Tax

I hope to start an EMBA in September and I have heard the fees, which I shall be paying myself are tax deductable to a certain degree in certain cantons. Anybody know how this works, specifically for Zurich?
Thanks.

If you are earning a salary in Switzerland you can deduct it for tax purposes. If you are paying quellensteuer you would need to fill in a form by spring next year and attach your receipts, they will do the calculation and send you the money. If you are taxed in the 'normal' way you enter the costs as a tax deduction on your return.

I really don't know, but you would get a credit (the limit probably soes differ between Cantons). There *is* going to be a big difference in taxes if you are wanting to choose between living in Zurich or Basel - Basel is about 40% more tax hungry. You can calculate taxes on Comparis.ch, but not with the education deduction.
