Fraudster living in Zurich!!

Please help!

My husband and I live in the UK & we have been victims of a spreadbetting fraud by a man who is originally from the U.K but now lives in Zurich. He has taken our life savings & now after 6 months has said he has lost all our money yet he will not show us any proof of this i.e bank statements or trading statements. We originally transferred our money into his uk a/c but he has put it into his own swiss a/c that is in joint names with his wife. I need to report this to the swiss police but don't know where to start. I cant find anything in google for reporting fraud to the swiss police or an email address. The uk police are doing as much as they can but it will take months to get a court order for an a/c in switzerland so I feel it is easier just to go straight to the swiss police. If anyone can point us in the right direction I would be so grateful.

We have been pleading for him to show us proof for 2 months now & he still won't which is only highlighting his guilt but I feel he is hiding behind the fact that he is in another country. We are so desperate now.

Oh, and his name is Nicholas F & his wife is called Irina K working as a financial advisor......just so you all know incase they try to fraud any of you also!!

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

Umm...I can't help you with the Swiss Police aspect of things, but I appreciate the dilemma you find yourselves in Shellhar.

From memory though, if the fraud took place on UK soil, then it will be for the UK police to deal with, as slow as that may be with the probable involvement of Interpol etc. Fraud cases can take months to investigate. So, you may find that the Swiss Police are reluctant to take up the enquiry.

Do you have proof that the fraudster lives in Switzerland or is it as assumption based on details provided by him/her? It is after all very easy to manipulate details when committing fraud.

Give the local authorities a call and see if they can help you, but I really wouldn't hold your breath!

Sorry, but I've been on the investigating side of all this and have some knowledge of how these cases are handled.

Hope it gets dealt with as quickly as possible for your sake! Good luck.

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

Really not sure this Forum is the best place to ask. Were all taxes paid in the UK on said money? What sort of contract did you enter into? I am afraid just handing over money (or did he really 'take it'?) in the hope of much larger than normal returns is (sorry to say) a dangerous gamble.

Why do you think that such a person would give their real name and location ?

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

And British police ... give them copies of every bit of correspondence and call records, etc, that you ever had with him.

Did you have a mobile number for him? If so, is it still working? He may be able to be traced via that.

Good luck.

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

You gambled your life savings on spreadbetting?

In the UK, spread betting is regulated by the Financial Services Authority rather than the Gambling Commission. Have you contacted either of them to at least add his name to a lsit etc.

Did you never receive any details of where the money was being bet at any time to see the progress?

Do you know where he is working as an advisor? It's a cheap flight for you to come over.

Good luck.

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

Spread betting is very risky as your exposure is hugely geared. It's not an investment at all. If he has been betting there should be contract notes for every transaction.

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

I didn't get whether the people you did business with were operating in the UK or Switzerland when the alleged fraud occurred. If in Switzerland, you might drop a line to Fed Pol (contact form at the bottom). From what you say, I doubt he was registered as a financial adviser here, but depending on how he marketed himself, you might want to inform Finma, which is the Swiss equivalent of the FSA.

@shellhar - Did you and your husband perform any due diligence on this alledged fraudster before taking the decision to entrust all of your life savings to him?

Here (crime prevention website) are contact details of people at Zürich City Police ("Staatspolizei Zuerich"), including the head of the crime prevention department:
Rolf Nägeli
Chef Kommissariat Prävention
044 411 74 50
rolf.naegeli@stp.stzh.ch

Perhaps he could give you the details of the fraud department or pass on your e-mail.

The same page also has contact details for crime prevention officers at Zürich Cantonal Police ("Kantonspolizei Zuerich").

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

I thought spread betting was a game , like Texas Holdem ? Just people trying to find the balance between risk and greed and then gambling on it.
Damm silly to want your money back if you lose.

True of most investments really.

Unless of course there is fraud / misrepresentation involved. But that has yet to be proven.

I think prevention in this case would be like closing the barn door after the horse had bolted.

Cross-jurisdiction pursuit of these people may be hard. Oh and we have two posts from one side of the story.....

btw, I have a cousin in Nigeria who tells me he can help you recoup many of your losses - want his email address? He's trying to get £800 million out of the country and you'll get 1% if you help him

Hey, I gave by life savings to a mr william hill in the uk, he promised me returns of 100-1 on an investment in Kempton called "Armful of Tiger Lilies".

unfortunately this investment fell, and mr hill is no longer answering my email or calls requesting my money back, it also seems like mr hill has moved to one of the channel islands in the mean time.

Can anyone help me??

Re: Fraudster living in Zurich!!

Shellhar, I think if you want some serious response, you need to be a little more specific as to why you believe it was a spread betting fraud. What was it that he offered you and why do you feel it was fraudulent. as you can see the reaction is turning negative .
You can appreciate that some use such a post with a totally different agenda to the one suggested in their message/request.
