I will be moving to Zurich this year and am on a package of 175K CHF net. I have a family of 4- wife and 2 kids aged 5 and 1. I want to know if my package is enough to get a good 4 bedroom flat, send kids to good private schools and get 2 cars. Also what is the tax system for that package for someone in zurich?
Also good areas to live- I will be working in the City...we are city people but my consider living outside as well
Many thanks

Come on guys, give him a rest... not everybody sees at first sight that this forum has higher standards of behavior than usual anonymous net forums.
And having such a high salary means he is most probably good, even better at something we are not, otherwise we would (not) be asking similar questions This skill might not be furious clicking at search button on every forum he goes in. Heck, if I always did search accurately before asking people I consider more knowledgeable, I would probably be spending all my free time just searching... and searching... (since I shop a lot, especially various outdoor equipment).
To OP - salary, especially if really NET is more than OK for your situation. But I don't think there is a limit in how much you can spend, especially here. So if you prefer posh, then better see how first months will go for you. 2 cars are no problem, but probably no need for both. Try first with one.

I think most people take issue with people coming here to ask whether they can live on a big salary when most people here are making much less. The "use the search" function is merely a mask.
Personally I think someone with common sense would know that with CHF 15k per month NET you can live comfortably in any city in the world.

I really blame the person who offered you that package when you can't know if it is enough to live here or no ,

Personally I think someone with common sense would know that with CHF 15k per month NET you can live comfortably in any city in the world. | | | | | I agree with your points, but they don't answer the OPs question.
To live in Zürich city in a 6 room apartment and send 2 kids to International school and run 2 cars and pay normal living expenses and have holidays and save on 175k net will not be a walk in the park. It's mainly the schooling that is the issue.
So 14.5k a month deduct
5k for an apartment (the cheapest on Homegate in Zürich city is 3.5k, but your very quickly looking at 5k plus)
6k for International school
1.5k for 2 cars assuming second hand on a lease including insurance, tax, maintenance etc
Suddenly that's 2k a month to feed and entertain a family and pay all the other bills. Suddenly someone whose salary is incurring the wrath go the EF lynch mob is scrimping and saving for a camping holiday...
OP - There are no issues leading a Zürich lifestyle on your salary, however it seems like you are trying to replicate a (at a guess) London lifestyle and it just doesn't work like that here. As I understand it (I don't have kids), kids don't go to school until 6 or 7. So you have nothing to worry about with sprog the younger for several years. The local schools here are typically very good, so I'm not sure if it's necessary, particularly in junior years to send them to an international school. I could understand it more if you wanted them to follow an international curriculum at 11-18, if you were planning on expating around the globe. There are loads of threads here of kids of the same as your eldest picking up the local lingo in no time and integrating fine if that's what concerns you and the school will help with extra German lessons. That's CHF 72k a year saved. You don't need two cars either as the public transport is so good, but you've got an extra 6k a month in the bank so treat yourself to something nice and get a kid mobile for when you need to take the family out | The following 5 users would like to thank eyebeebe for this useful post: | |

Tiger | | | | | Ahah, why would you bother with the yourself with "tax system" if you posted a net wage figure? Btw, it's not enough for Zürich, ask 200K.

Whenever someone asks a question like this, I wonder whether they know that the average salary is more like 50K and that not being able to live with triple the average salary is simply greedy. Also - ask any Swiss and they'll tell you that only weird kids or ones where the parents have no interest in them learning the local language go to private school. My school in Zurich had its own gym and it was a state school, just in case you are worried about luxury things...

I'd love to see a private salary survey of EF members so we could direct people to it....but I suspect we wouldn't get the truth |
