[175K, 2 adults+2 kids, Zürich] | Quote: | | | | | I think most people take issue with people coming here to ask whether they can live on a big salary when most people here are making much less. The "use the search" function is merely a mask. | | | | | It's not a matter of making more or less. People making that kind of money obviously must have demonstrated specific skills - including basic intellectual acumen - justifying them being paid 3x average salary. Now how exactly can they justify earning that amount of money while at the same time being clueless whether it is at all or not appropriate to their rank / social position / geographic location is beyond me.
Now do they take issue at not being helped - or rather at being exposed?

Good for him, for working with all the materials available to him | | | | | Well, if Mr Tozzi had been truly as intelligent and valuable as he claimed, he would have said "Hey Mr Obviously UpperMiddleManagementMan, can I send you my c.v.??? Sincerely, Mr SuperAwesomeAndAvailable.". But, no, alas, twas not to be. It probably wouldn't have been in English anyway....

I will be moving to Zurich this year and am on a package of 175K CHF net. I have a family of 4- wife and 2 kids aged 5 and 1. I want to know if my package is enough to get a good 4 bedroom flat, send kids to good private schools and get 2 cars. Also what is the tax system for that package for someone in zurich?
| | | | | You said 175 chf net...if someone hasn't given you the details on the tax deduction, how can this be net?
But anyways, even if the 175 CHF is not net, you will still be the envy of many who would love to have a salary like that.
Private schools will take a huge chunk of that though and I do not recommend this. As for 2 cars, you may find you only need one, and car prices vary greatly.
Good luck with your decision.

Now do they take issue at not being helped - or rather at being exposed? | | | | | I think you all are being a bit harsh as, especially at that level and if the spouse used to work, it's an important and complicated equation. Personally, I'd tell the guy that, sure, it's a decent salary but, no, it ain't close to what 175k might get you in NYC not only because of the taxation, cost of living, etc., but that life here is going to be a lot different and, depending on your lifestyle (everything closes by 8 more or less), if you're used to NYC and drop into a zurich suburb with a family, nothing is going to make you happy no matter the amount of money (unless, of course, like a lot of folks your family lives half the year elsewhere as it seems to be popular with the long-timers). It's a tough decision and salary is based on a lot of subjective things. Don't show me a graph, show me folks who live on this level of salary and are they my kind of folks...
What people are asking when they say, can I live on 175k in Zurich is, can I have the same lifestyle as I did back in the US and the honest answer is, NO. Don't come for the mountains. Don't come for the chocolates. If you have to ask if you can afford it, you're going to be miserable here. I'd bet my hat on that.
