Part of last year I paid Quellensteuer. For the other part of the year I had the following;

Taxable Income - 58'000.-

My tax was calculated as follows

Total einfache Steuer 6.4367% - 3'733.-

Kantonssteuer 109% - 4'069.-
Gemeindesteuer 108% - 4'031.-
Feuerwehrsteuer - 140.-

Total Steuer 8'241.-

For a single person living in AG, is this not around double what someone would expect to pay?

You need to gross up that income to a full year to get the tax rate. If 58,000 was your income for the year it's too high, if not it's probably correct.

Move to ZH your tax bill will be lower.

My full wage for the year was just over 70'000, but as i said, i Quellensteuer to BS at around 2'000.- already

The total of 70'000 meant that i paid over 10'000.-
Thats 1/7th of my wage, nearly 2 months

Tried that, it came to more than 2'000 less than i need to pay

2 K would be tax to Bern on top, sounds about right for 70k

BS & AG have much higher tax rates than ZH, 1-2 months pay is quite normal.
