Yes you can buy gold at the UBS counter but when you want to sell it you have to have a UBS account since UBS does not give more than 25K CHF in cash. Do you know of any precious mettals dealers where you can get paid in cash?
I would suggest you buy your gold in 100 gram bars. You can still easily sell these for cash (at the UBS) or on eBay or Ricardo. The higher price for 10 x 100g bars vs. the 1 kg bar is worth it to avoid extra hassle when selling.

Not sure how liquid these 100g bars you are talking about. Maximum I see on Ricardo is 20g. Besides how can you tell someone that buying 100g would yield a higher sell price?? As he would be buying it high himself, otherwise everyone would be buying the 100g bars and flogging them on Ricardo And further more, Ricardo takes a cut from the sale price and there is also the cost of delivery that will need to be considered.

If you read the question correctly you will see that he wants to know where he can buy gold and trade for cash for values above CHF25k, so what you're saying is irrelevant in any case

It might be relevant to the person I answered....at least more relevant to this thread than your last nonsensical answer at message #11.

I'm not gonna debate whether your answer might be relevant to the person asking the question or not, it's irrelevant to the question and that's all that matters

And if you actually consider what I said on post #11 you will find that my answer wasn't as nonsensical as you may think, as Silver has tanked from a high of $37 to around $28 which is about a 25% depreciation, so for someone to make these outlandish statements which are unqualified is ludicrous. And your statements sound just outlandish and without any disclaimers warning people that you are talking out of your backside to put it mildly

Have you personally experienced any incremental hassle trying to sell a 1kg gold bar vs a 100g bar, and if so can you please quantify it.

I buy gold in 100 gram bars. That is for flexibility so I can choose to sell a part lot or the whole lot.

having seen the mark-up in 1g bars, i might go into business buying 1kg bars and re-working them into 1g bars for sale!

If you look the trend of other metals they are quite low now:

Maybe they'll raise up, as they are less trendy than gold?

You haven't personally experienced any quantifiable additional hassle trying to sell 1kg Au in a 1kg bar versus selling 1kg Au in 100g bars.

Re: buying gold in zurich

All this talk of buying gold reminds me when my life was put into perspective.

Popping into CS branch to pay some bills (another story why I had to go in and do that rather than online) I noticed the backpacker looking couple at the cashier next to me.

They were enquiring about a gold bar. "Gold bar", I thought!!!!! I had no idea you could just walk into a bank and do that. But anyway, evidently you can. The couple were quoted i believe to be 44 000 chf for the kilo they wanted. Twas no problem, they had plent of envelopes of cash in their handy rucksuck.

It was difficult for me to concentrate on my dealings as well as theirs, so I missed some of the next bit, but there seemed to be an issue at this point. The kilo was not available now.

The guy was a bit stumped, he had been in 30minutes before apparently, enquired with a guy he pointed out, and said he had just collected the funds to purchase. The teller pointed out that its popular at the moment and has been sold. "Oh, so everyones buying kilo gold bars at the moment", i thought.

The guy then enquired about 4 x 250g bars and this seemed to be ok. But then another snag developed as I was done with my business and I couldnt be so blatant as to hang around nosing.

But none the less, I felt pretty poor after that
