I know I can buy gold at major UBS branches

Any idea what their premium / markup is?

Can you negotiate their premium with the bank teller?

i want to buy some gold, rent a safe deposit box at ubs and store my gold there

thanks guys

EDIT: I think safe deposit box is the best option after reading this:

Re: buying gold in zurich

Have you taken advice on this investment idea? It seems that gold prices are at a record high. So maybe it is better to look for something cheap that might get more expensive, like shares in BP for instance. And you would save yourself the deposit box rental.

Is it easy to buy shares here? And to sell it off when the price is high? Because I am wondering if it is so easy, why aren't everyone buying shares of, let's say, ABB or Nestlé? They keep on rising as I heard? Taxwise it is very complicated?

Don't mean to hijack the thread. Maybe I should check if there is a thread on share buying...thanks.

Well if you happen to believe that Greece will soon be declared in default & the subsequent payment of CDSs will start a collapse of the banking system then maybe gold is a good option.

On the other hand you might think the banks are so stuffed with money printed by the ECB & Federal Reserve that they can pay out without any issue.

The challenge of buying shares like BP is that they are denominated in UK£ so you have to hope that both the price will rise & at the same time the UK£ will not fall against the CHF to negate the rise.
At one time during the last 5 years the UK£ lost nearly 50% of its value versus the CHF

I have had the pleasure in the past of buying US shares which rose in price but as the US$ fell against the CHF then the overall change was small.

Ah yes, gold, the best fear based scam of the century.

By all means, do invest your savings in gold, in case of collapse you'll end up with a non-fungible, non-tradable 1kg (or whatever quantity) chunk of metal.

Sorry for the interruption, now returning to your usual scheduled programme...

I believe you can have lower promiums by buying from proaurum.ch
I'm a regular buyer from this shop: I can recommend.
You can order online and then collect directly at they office in Kilchberg.

Depends on what you are speculating on.

Option A: Prices for real estate and gold will rise as seen, stock market still going sideways. -> Buy gold and real estate.

Option B: Stock market will go bearish again. Prices for real estate, and gold will go sideways. -> Buy shares.

Option C: Mild crash, stock market goes down, real estate bull bursts. Gold will go up.
-> Buy gold and then buy some cheapish real estate.

Option D: System goes haywire. No stock market anymore. Gold will rise, and rise, and rise. -> Buy Lead, steel, brass, copper, glass, a nice patch of land, potatoes, and some pigs. (Lead and brass in form of cartridges, steel in form of a gun, copper in form of a still, and glass in form of bottles)

PS: Hindsight is always 20/20.

May I remind you that in hindsight gold tanked along with the precedent "mild" crashes :-)

buying gold at swiss banks

do they charge a premium for 999.9 1 oz bars and coins? I think they sell gold coins from different countries
Is their premium different for bars and coins?
Is it less for bars than coins?
any idea which 999.9 bar or coin has the lowest premium?

Ask them yourself

But rule of thumb is: The bigger, the better. So, go for the 400 oz t ones

So it's possible to buy gold from most major UBS banks in Zürich? Any specific places to go? And what about silver bullion coins? I'm visiting Zürich for the first time and have no idea where to go :-)

Go to the UBS precious metals counter on Bahnhofstrasse 45. I think they also sell silver coins.

Otherwise there's proaurum in Kilchberg. You can check on their website what they have in stock.

Re: buying gold in zurich

Yes you can buy gold at the UBS counter but when you want to sell it you have to have a UBS account since UBS does not give more than 25K CHF in cash. Do you know of any precious mettals dealers where you can get paid in cash?
