Tax question for Swiss working in foreign University

Dear All, Hello.

I would like to clarify for myself such a question. I am Swiss national, moved to Gemeva area after long (more 10 year) absence, , working in a foreign university, based at CERN, which in fact is international organization and expemt from taxes. I am payed by foreign university through CERN. I was told that, since now I am living in Geneva and I am Swiss, I have to pay Swiss taxes as self employed. I have to pay second pillar as a self employed as well. It seems to me to be strange, since I am University employee and my activity is "lucrative dépendante". Can somebody tell me is this correct or not? I mean to pay Swiss taxes as self employed. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.
Thanks for greeting me.

So, may be somebody knows? Why I have to register as self
employee for tax purposes, if I am working in forgeign
universtity and I am based a CERN? For pension fund and
second pillar I understand, my employer is not member of
Swiss pension system. But why for tax purposes?

Re: Tax question for Swiss working in foreign University

If you are a Swiss citizen you will have to pay Swiss taxes even when working in a tax exempt organization such as CERN. The tax exemption only applies to non-Swiss (and having dual-nationality won't work - if you're in Switzerland you're Swiss irrespective of any other nationalities you might have).

No, Swiss nationals, working at CERN or other Int. Organizations does not pay taxes. There is special bullet in GeTax2011, for them, who works there. My question is, why I have to pay taxes as self employed and not just ordinary employee of foreign university

Are you the same person as "okost"?

Did you ask CERN to explain it to you properly? If they can't explain it to you, you'll need to go straight to the source: The tax authority.

The question is probably if you are an employee or not. If your employer tells you to register, then you probably are not.

So you both have the same situation? The "swiss government" should know what you need to know. Did they tell you why you need to register this way? Doesn't CERN already have employees in this situation?

I can't imagine this is new. There has to have been other Swiss citizens working at CERN.

Re: Tax question for Swiss working in foreign University

No we do not have same situation. He is leaving, as far as I know. I just came back. Repeating again, if I would be CERN employee, there woud not be any taxes. I am foreign University employee, just based at CERN, but Swiss national, by birth. Can one imagine, that Swiss national works for NON SWISS institution and came back to Geneva to lieve here for some time?
