US Tax payment from Switzerland?

Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for how best to pay/transfer tax payment from my Swiss bank (Postfinance) directly to the US IRS? I've looked at enrolling at www.eftps.gov, but they only seem to accept US financial institutions as the source. There is also www.pay1040.com, but we do not want to use a credit card, prefer to transfer direct bank to bank. Having our bank cut a money order would take quite some time (a week at least), and we want to make payment before the 17th to avoid another late penalty.

thanks in advance,
jeremy

The alternative that works for us is to have a checking account in the US and feed it from here. You can usually set up a SWIFT transaction. I don't believe the IRS will accept SWIFT but perhaps they have had to since they are going after expats in a big way.

Re: US Tax payment from Switzerland?

Using a US bank account and either wiring funds to it or using paypal is about the only way. The US is very isolated when it comes to being able to make international payments.

Re: US Tax payment from Switzerland?

thanks for the tips all. I ended up arranging a SWIFT transfer via my Postfinance account to my US account, then having my US bank cut the check direct to IRS for me. A bit of a hassle, but at least I know the steps for next time. I also enrolled with EFTPS (didn't initiate in time for this payment) so that for future payments I can forgo the check and have the transfer direct from bank to IRS.

I am not sure about post finance, but there are swiss banks that can make you a check to send in USD, it will cost you, but it is possible.
