claiming VAT from Germany

Hi all!

I know there are tons of threads about this but I couldn't find an answer. I'm servicing my car in DE but it's not near the border, so they are not used to customers claiming tax back. So they don't have that form that needs to be stamped in order for me to get a refund on VAT.

My questions are:

Do I absolutely need that form? Can't I just take the receipt to the border? In case I need it, where do I get it? Is it the "Ausfuhr- und Abnehmerbescheinigung für Umsatzsteuerzwecke"? If so, can I just download it, print it, and ask the garage to fill it?

Thanks for your time helping me out!

Cheers

Fabio

Re: claiming VAT from Germany

Confirm with the garage if an official 'Ausfuhr' stamp from the DE Zollamt will suffice their end. Most companies (in my experience) accept this in lieu of the official export form.

If ok, present an original invoice made out to your Swiss address at the DE Zollamt and ask for it to be stamped. Post original stamped invoice back to the garage for the refund.

You get the VAT back from the garage so it is their decision what process & forms to use.

It is even possible that they could decide not to charge you VAT in the first place. Depends how well they undestand the VAT tax process & what level of risk they want to take that they might have to pay the VAT themselves at some later date.
I assume you have a Swiss registered car & a Swiss address they would write on the invoice?

Thanks for the replies, I will try, but the people there seemed quite clueless.

Clueless or unhelpful?
If they don't give you back VAT, then I propose you take your car elsewhere. There are numerous garages there. Those with "good processes" will be a better bet.
