I just wish they would have done it next year. I was planning to double my stake in the 1H of 2017.

Sold my shareholding in ARMH now, so fingers-crossed for the deal to fall apart!

Otherwise, I need other ideas of what to invest in!

Not touching bank shares with a barge pole.
I'd normally agree but they had a real plunge a couple of weeks ago that looked like the usual over-reaction, so I bought a chunk of these three, which have earned me a few quid so far, since I bought on 5th July:

RBS +14.1%
Barclays +7.8%
Lloyds +5.3%

I'll hang on for the moment but I'm watching them closely.

Re: Stock investment poll

I'm kinda out of ideas. I had intended to invest further into ARM for the next year, but now have instead sold and struggled with what to put the money into instead. The price of everything seems quite high, but in the end, I decided to plump the lot into FB and so now my portfolio is even more concentrated and looks like:

FB
GOOG
WMT
BP

FB earnings release today. A few commentators are expecting it to disappoint. What do you think? Hit or miss?

Brave and bold move, but good on you. Not in the loop with FB to be honest plus l'm not a fan either.

Very positive results - glad I reallocated some funds to it pre-earnings call. I expect a decent uplift to the price tomorrow.

Facebook is on a PE of 80, so hardly making bundles of cash, what could possibly go wrong

Well, I guess technically there could be a small chance that it doesn't quadruple it's earnings in the next couple of years...

based on the quarterly results, i'm guessing by the end of the year, FB will have a PE of about 40 (at current prices).

i expect that the next doubling will take much longer.

Another earnings release from an MCR fund company. Today it will be Google (Alphabet).

Share price is already riding high. What do you think? Hit or miss?

Re: Stock investment poll

I don't have anything of value to say apart from a little anecdote about my (hitherto unsuccessful) attempts at stock picking: out of a joke I bought a bunch of shares of Medical Marihuana a few years back. I didn't even look at the stock price evolution or company fundamentals, just did it on the whim that with a cool name like that, they must be coining money. Turns out I bought right into a pump&dump scheme. I NOPE'd the hell out of it before I lost all my beer budget for the year. Oh well.

Re: Stock investment poll

Interesting market reaction to FB. It opened at an all time high and has been steadily decreasing. It could even end up lower than the previous day at this rate.

It seems many believe that the only way is down for FB and there's not much upside...

WSJ says that FB seems to owe $3-5bln more in taxes than reported. Depending on the calendar quarters that refers to, it may well mean much slower earnings growth.

I'm thinking of putting serious wonga on Vertu Motors (VTU). It's currently 5 year low but still pays dividend so can sit tight until it goes up.

Compared to Lookers (LOOK) the NAV is 0.37 and the current price is 0.42 but Lookers' NAV is 0.35 and their share price is 1.10. Therefore, Vertu has a look of upside and all of their directors are buying on the dip, which gives me some confidence.

Vertu is listed in AIM, which means no stamp duty to be paid upon purchase and I believe it can also be added to SIPP (need to double check), which means exempt from CGT if you were UK resident.

However, if you don't want to believe the hype then you better do your own research.
Not sure if anyone dabbled in this stock but it's currently up by almost 15% since the last post.

Impressive statistic:

Quote:
Leaving aside China, where they don’t operate, 72 per cent of the world’s online advertising already passes through the online platforms of Facebook and Google, according to Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research. As the digital pie grows, the two are set to take an even bigger slice, rising to 87 per cent by the end of the decade, he predicts.

Assuming that they settle at $5bn. That would take less than $2 from the share price. Quite substantial, but not fatal.

The Google anti-trust issues could have more exposure and I remain surprised by the fact that Google haven't cleaned up their act. Either they are incredibly confident of their position, incredibly incompetent or have calculated that the risk is worth it from an economic/reputation standpoint.

Looking closer to home (in CH):

VTX:SYNN will return you nearly 20% tax-free in less than a year IF the merger goes through (and probably won't fall much if it doesn't, and there are still suitors out there). The dividend yield is currently an 'OK' 2.81% (still better than stashing cash under your mattress or in the bank).

VTX:ZURN is looking cheap right now and has great growth potential but even if not, its dividend yield on the current share price is almost 7.5% tax paid.
Quote:

SYNN is in such a mess that I would be reluctant to touch it. ZURN, I know nothing about, but 7.5% is very attractive... if they can sustain that dividend.

BP also has >7% dividend, but that is extremely shakey...
I'm pretty happy with my choices ... also the others I haven't listed here.

This made me laugh: "For the world’s top tech fund, Facebook Inc. is finally cheap enough to buy."

On the day that FB is near its all-time high
