When to time move from ZRh from VD so I pay my yearly taxes in ZRH?

Hi,

I'm maybe planning to move to Zurich from Vaud around the end of this year (relocating to live with the boyfriend). I know that taxes on earnings are lower in Zurich (although I couldn't find the exact %) and I've *heard* that if you move before the end of the year, your whole year is taxed to the rate of your new canton of residence. Do you know where I could find:-
1) confirmation of this?
2) when is the latest date I should become a resident in Zurich to be able to be taxed there instead of Vaud?

It's probably been asked before but couldn't find the right post on the forum... Many thanks in advance to the kind souls who can point me in the direction of some official links...

As far as I know, this is only true if you pay normal taxes, not tax at source.

Also, the date varies by canton (some it's where you live on 31 December, others 1 January).

The magic date used to be 1st January, but book keepers changed this about 10 years ago to 31. December.

For all of 2012, you pay your taxes (Not tax taken at source) where you are registered on 31. December.

Be careful, the government offices are often "half closed" after Christmas.

Rental properties are difficult to find for the end of December, as many rental contracts do not allow a move on 31. December.

So if you are renting, look at 30 November as a possible moving date. And as many contracts have a 3 month resignation clause, you should be looking for properties right now!

But so if I'm taxed at the source, it won't change anything?
Do you have a source for this?

Also I'd be added as a subletter (or flatmate) to an existing contract, but you're right that it might still have to be done for 1st of December. I'm not sure rental contracts allow adding people in the middle of a month...

I am not sure how being taxed at source is handled.

This link talks about paying taxes for canton Vaud (in French).
http://www.vd.ch/themes/etat-droit-f...ger-de-canton/

It says that it is based on where you live at the end of the year, that you pay the whole of the taxes. You would be reimbursed for the taxes you paid to the other canton so that you can give it to Vaud.

I had this happen when I moved from Lausanne to Bern at the beginning of December. I had to pay for the whole year in Bern. I had to get my tax money back from Vaud and then give it to Bern. Why this couldnt be done directly by them, I dont know.
I am not taxed at source though so do not know how that works for your situation.
Your best bet might be to call and ask how source taxation is handled.

Tom
If you were moving but remaining within the same kanton then the date as of 2009 was 1 January even if you were taxed at source.

My source is that I have done this personally and can confirm my tax remained in the community I left until 1 January of the following year.

However the situation may be different if you are leaving the kanton as my situation was within the Zurich kanton for the move.

Yes I will phone them to ask, thanks.

Just wanted to leave a trace: I found the imposition rates for people taxed at the source in Vaud (Barême A & B) which can be compared with the rate in Canton Zürich (only available as Monatstarife?!). I'm also not sure about the various A's (A0-A5) are for, I couldn't find the definition...

So I phoned them and indeed since people taxed at the source are taxed per month, you wouldn't get your taxes back for the year. The new canton's tax rate is just effective from the month you move residence.
