Re: How to get rid of 5 Rappens???

Since moving to Switzerland, I've started to collect coins... I used to be one to get rid of them, but since I buy my milk and eggs direct from the farmer, I am always in need of the coins to pay them. I just collect all of my coins in a glass. More often than not, I run out and have to get rid of my bills again!

Note: The above poster was refering to older silver coins pre-1968. I also collect them. My oldest is a 10rappen piece from 1911

Re: How to get rid of 5 Rappens???

Collect all your coins and go to the larger offices of a bank. They have machines that'll do the job and give your paper. There's some kind of fee - you'll need to make sure it's worth it. Otherwise, tip generously when you go out. Tip jars are a good place.

Re: How to get rid of 5 Rappens???

Would'nt it better to make 0.25 and 0.5 coins and round up or down the prices instead of dealing with 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2?! What I think is that this economy policy (3 coins) is much beneficial for the government to control the economy.

Tradition: keep them in a jar in order to pay the bride's shoes.
Practical: keep them in a box and bring it to a post office with coin counting machine.
Fun: Same as practical but you spend the money on your way home.
Saver: Pay your groceries cash, always use the small coins, you'll get read of not only 5 Rappen but also 10 and 20 Rappen coins.
I've done numbers two and four, but not paying for all my groceries, it took twenty six 20 Rappen pieces just to pay for a packet of loo rolls! The cashier lady in Migros wasn't terribly happy.

I throw them in a bottle, and when it's full put it outside with a wee smily note on it... it's always gone the next time I go out

I meant it differently:
when the sum is 18,45, I might give 20,45 or 50,45, in order to get a round number back. Doing it regularly, you will get rid of small coins often, but you will also get some more it you happen not to have the little change that day. When the sum is 71,85, try to give 101,85 if you have the change on that day or at least 100,05 or 101,35, depending on what coins you have that day.
Itworks for me.

Alternative five: Make a pile of ten 5-Rappen coins and ask a cashier lady you know well in a shop you go often to give you a 1/2 francs coin. You could say you need it for the coffe machine at work or something if you feel the need to do a bit of conversation.

However, it's not silver, as only 1/2, 1, 2, and 5 france pieces were.

Do not understand your comment?

Think most people are happy with 5 being the lowest coin

It might work for you, but not for most cashiers. Whenever I try that approach I am met with blank stares or 'helpful' references to the correct amount I have to pay. Sometimes I had to tell them to key the amount received from me into the till. The look on their face when they realize they can return 20.50 or 85.50 to me - priceless.

Ya, I know those too . It works only with a cashier who knows you well and in a shop you go regularly. My chocolate shop would do anything for me, I am a big sponsor of theirs. It's harder at Migros. However, I gladly tell them who much they have to give me back. Getting what I want is more important to me than paying without speaking.
It's worth being nice to cashier ladies, they might remember you when you need them to do you a favour. But it's not full-proof, you're right

e.kazemi, I don't really get you tbh. Maybe you should save every cent you have instead of throwing them away, as it seem your PhD is going to cost you quite a bit and you want to save up for the Swiss citizenship in 10-12 years time

And sometimes it works in your favour, like this morning when I was carefully counting out my change (including 2*5Rp) for the 5.95 sandwich, and came up 5rp short, but the cashier really couldn't be arsed, so it was ish'OK, rather then getting my wallet out and paying by note or card.

Re: How to get rid of 5 Rappens???

Switzerland needs Coinstar machines. That way you can pay for the privilege of converting your coins to notes.

I've never heard of someone complaining about having too many of a certain denomination. Dump them into a charity bin if they bother you so much...

I would, but it would probably cost more in train fares to get to you .

Give them to your favourite charity Phil. (Or is that your nearest bar )

Stamp machines take them- so collect a few together and you will get enough to pay for rather a lot of useful stamps!
Hi,
Where do I find these stamp machines?

I went out today to Post office to get some larger priced stamps, but had a chf worth of 5s, in a spare pocket, to use in a machine, as would be funny, like penny arcade.
no machine there or around outside the building. None in Coop or local shoppng mall
thinking about posting friends in Switzerland, hand painted postcards or the like with those 85 rap stamps - tee-hee, or maybe stick 5 raps coins to the cards

Not sure I would use the term "monitoring", but maybe more "observant"

So, what did you end up doing with your pocket change?
