Selling on eBay

I'm moving to Switzerland soon and I'll have somethings with me I want to sell on eBay on arrival as I won't have space for them in the new flat. Used clothes and toys in general, nothing really expensive. I was wondering if I sell to someone in the US or UK for instance, would they have to pay import duty? Would I have to pay any sort of 'fee' or whatever when sending several packets abroad?

Re: Selling on eBay

I guess they "should" have to pay import duty, it depends on how much you value the goods. I have bought from UK and US eBay sites here and haven't yet had to pay any import duty, but I think I've been lucky!

If I were you, I would sell in the EU before you move here if possible

Re: Selling on eBay

yeah, you're right. I got rid off lots of things the past few weeks but I won't have time to list and sell the rest, which really is a drag as most of the clothes are in virtually new condition and i don't want to throw them away so i'll have to take them with me. Grumpygrapefruit, haven't you been taxed on your purchases? A friend told me they tax everything you receive through the post in Switzerland. I don't buy much on eBay and now I am even more wary after learning about import duties on the thread I read about buying on eBay.

Re: Selling on eBay

You should be taxed on most things you receive through the post here but out of maybe 20 deliveries I have only been taxed once. Like I said, I know I have been lucky (quarter Irish you see).

There is a similar web site to eBay over here called ricardo.ch that seems very popular, you might find a big market within Switzerland itself if you use this site.

Re: Selling on eBay

Another thing to think about is that postage costs from Switzerland can be quite high.

Re: Selling on eBay

I have bought several things from the EU, and only the more expensive S/H items get taxed. You might try listing them on Swiss ebay/Ricardo.ch as there is little competition for clothes. All the stuff seems very expensive and/or junk.

Re: Selling on eBay

I think I will try to list on eBay.ch and take a look at Ricardo too. Thanks for all the tips!
