2012 Tax Reminder - Not sure what to do

I left CH in May and I just received a 1st reminder titled "Aufforderung zur Abgabe der Steuererklärung 2012".

It states:

"Sie habe die Steuererklärung 20132 nicht innerhalb der Abgabefrist eingereicht. Für diese Mahnung müssen wir eine Gebühr von 40Fr Erheben."
(Ok, I get that part... I just don't understand the rest...)

I don't understand what I'm supposed to do. This is for 2012. I worked in CH from Jan - May 2012, but I don't have any tax or earnings statements from the employer for this period, nor can I access my earnings statements or bank information, or really, anything at this point. I wasn't expecting to have to do anything tax related until January at the earliest. My taxes were withheld at source, btw.

What exactly do I have to do to get the Steuerverwaltung off of my back without having to hire an accountant that I can't afford?

Does anyone have experience after leaving CH with getting tax help from the Swiss embassy?

Why dont you just write them an email in English? Tell them your situation and ask them what you are supposed to do.

All your 2012 taxes were due when you left Switzerland. (See Zurich for ex.)
Contact your employer and your bank to get all earning and bank statements you will need. Employer should be quite simple bank may be more complicated. But where the hell did you leave your bank statements?

Seriously?

Why is communicating with the people asking you for money a "smartarse response"?

Better a smartarse than an arse IMO.

I didn't think those were smart assed responses. They are very valid to your situation.

Rather than overthink it and get all worked up, just contact the Steuerverwaltung and ask for clarification and instructions. You might find the answer is simple. If it turns out be more complex, then you can worry about hiring an accountant, etc. You also mention contacting the Embassy, which is a great idea.

In my limited experience, letters here are strongly worded to elicit a response, even if the issue is relatively minor. Sounds like they got your attention. Good luck!

Re: 2012 Tax Reminder - Not sure what to do

Actually, there was a reason behind the email rather than calling :-)

When you write an email there is a larger chance of them helping you in English since you give them time to read rather then "jump on" them with English.

In my experience if you call and ask if they speak English, they usually respond "no" even though they actually do understand English pretty well.

My experiences on the phone have worked well. That said, it is BS and they are pretty well set up for auslanders.

Re: 2012 Tax Reminder - Not sure what to do

We went, in person, to the Tax office in Zurich and got 110% customer service - the receptionist actually called someone down from the inner vaults to answer our specific question - and they were extremely helpful and solved our problem.

We also had no problem dealing with them via email. Even though they told us they 'normally' require a proper written instruction, posted by regular mail, they still solved the problem via email within 48 hours.

Re: 2012 Tax Reminder - Not sure what to do

If you don't have any financial statements then you're stuck. Did you have a bank account? Did you file before? Who did you work for? Directly or contract?

I'm sensing you can't be bothered with some of your provided information. Either that or you're 12.

Re: 2012 Tax Reminder - Not sure what to do

The 2012 tax return should have been in ages ago, if you had applied for an extension it would be free, but they are now charging you an extra Fr 40 for being late. You MUST file a tax return as soon as possible otherwise they might complete it for you (YES this happened to my stupid ex-wife) and fine you as well!

Your 2012 tax return covers your financial affairs during the year 2011, so better start collecting the correct paperwork. Most banks send you an end of year statement for tax purposes, stating your assets and the interest you earnt.

And of course apart from your salary, you have to pay tax on your 'fortune/assets' - eg property owned in CH or elsewhere, investments, etc, etc.

Does anyone know how long you have to keep tax statements, bank statements, etc, in Switzerland. I think it is 7 years in the UK.

So what happens if somebody has kept no records, no bank statements, no financial record of any kind? Does anyone actually know?

I wish you well KF, but the mind does boggle about NO records whatsoever?
