Do I need to register as a company or not?

Hi

Wondering if anyone can help a little!

I'm in Switzerland due to my husband's job and his B permit plus being Eu citizen means I can work. In the UK I was a teacher and educational consultant. I do the odd day supply teaching here and occasionally do some online consultancy and ICT training for educators in schools/at conferences.
The supply work is simple as tax etc is deducted by school. However, I want to ensure that the consultancy/training (which amounts so far this year to about 4,000CHF) is "dealt with properly" in terms of tax.
Do I HAVE to register as a company (sole proprietor) or is it sufficient to declare the income on his tax form? I'm not looking to claim unemployment benefit or anything like that, and my income will not increase much- in fact, it'll probably decrease.
I have searched the forum but am getting increasingly confused as to what i have to do!

Thanks!

You have to account for AHV, so you will have to register as a company. Either that, or your clients have to employ you.

That's my understanding, and I'd be very pleased to be wrong. But I don't think I am.

NAT is right. Best bet is to contact your Gemeinde/city hall for details. They will point you to the right office for AHV. Once you have claimed yourself as self employed, then you can leave it at that... or create your own business with the Handelsregisteramt. Initial advantage is going public with your own company name.

The folks at the AHV office will ask you (in the paperwork) how much your annual salary will be as self employed. That is the amount in which you will be billed for. If your annual personal tax form shows you made the same about as your social payments are for... good. If you made more, you will be billed for the extra or receive a cash back for the income you paid social expenses for but did not receive. Complicated? No, not really Here is an example:

- Social expenses claimed and over the year paid for annual income of 50k
- Personal tax form said you made 35k, you receive the overpaid (also at a very handsome interest rate, better than any bank offers!!).
- However, if you make 80k, then you pay the difference.

Again, your Gemeinde/city hall will best answer any questions you have. Lastly, don't be surprised at the costs they are billing your for, remember you are paying 100% (not 50/50 with your employer) for the pension costs and/or other shared social costs

Hi
If your turnover/income is 4000.-- or below in a year, you do not need to file as self employed. Simply file your income in the tax statement. Turnovers below around CHF 6000.-- have a minimum contribution of around CHF 400.-- a year (AHV). Tax authorities in Zurich are informing AHV if your income surpasses 4000.- as self employed, then all the paperwork will be sent automatically.

Also, a filing as self employed at the commercial register is only required as from turnovers of above CHF 100'000.-

Andy
