Just found a lady - works for FIDINAM a big accounting firm down here, she speaks English and is prompt, and she came highly praised by a colleague. I meet her next week and will report back on rates etc. In case anyone needs an English speaking tax consultant in Lugano her name is

Dolores Spiatta, Fidinam & Partners SA, Via Maggio 1, CH - 6901 Lugano

If you need a Zurich based advisor - great price, great service; try :

Have used him for last 5years, and spot on...

Anyone know an updated English speaking tax resource in the Zurich area?
I tried to contact the person from Brugg but the email address is no longer valid.

Thanks

Nevermind - I was using the old email address.

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

This company was recommended to me by a bank employee... they seem to have offices everywhere,
http://www.vermoegenszentrum.ch/Contact

For a simple situation without property, many people advertise on Migros and Coop notice boards as willing to help you: look for words with "Steuer... " the normal charge is Fr 70 to Fr 100

So far so good with this lady folks, she is very efficient and answers questions quickly over email, I had a half hour meeting with her which really helped clarify some issues i've had. Official rate is 150CHF an hour, haven't got the bill yet though, so not sure how it will all add up. Overall though i'm happy to pay for the service.

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

Hi - I am an American expat myself and found this firm to be very good for help with expatriate tax returns - www.taxesforexpats.com

Their web site also has a lot of relevant info - about foreign earned income exclusion, IRS deadlines, FBAR filing, etc.

I used them last year and was very impressed, so happy to recommend to others.

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

Back on topic please.

Mark, on starting this Thread, said:

please try to limit it only to recommendations and questions about specific tax professionals.

so self-advertising posts (which belong in the Market Place) and questions about ones personal tax situation don't go in here.

Thank-you.

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

Does any one know the answer to this tax situation.

I have a contract in Afghanistan. As the contract is with an NGO I pay no taxes. My home is here in Zürich. I will travel between the two countries in intervals of around 6 wks with several short "home-office" periods. But approx. 4 mnths is on site. The contract is with a UK company.

So do I pay taxes and if so where ?

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

lots of good recommendations, but other than the obvious Big 4, is there anyone else in the ZH area who can handle both Swiss and US tax filing? seems to be a better idea to have both prepared by the same firm - as they can optimize the tax better that way!

They are not in Zurich but just a short distant in Eiken is Denise Collin who does Swiss taxes http://www.colfina.ch/ and she works with a women in Rheinfelden who does the American Taxes http://www.americanincometax.com/ They are both much more reasonable and they have found many mistakes the big 4 have made. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'm aware of Denise's service, but didnt realize that she's teamed up with someone else for the American part. If you've used them personally, would you be able to share how it was with the two of them working together? Was it efficient/effective?

the AIT price (for US tax) is rather on the higher side compared to lots of other places - CHF 550 for Single plus CHF 50 for each of Schedule B, D, etc. and this does NOT include sales tax. I would certainly think that Schedule B is common enough that it should be included in the base 550 fee. I only need to take standard deduction in the US to be fair, so it's rather simple (no copmlex investments either). But Denise is on the cheaper side, so maybe it'll all add up at the end

I have not used AIT personally but I know many who have and I have their business cards to give out to my clients. I file a very easy tax return for the U.S. as I do not have any property there etc.. Denise has done my personal and business accounting for over 3 years now and she is excellent and very easy to work with! I have referred many people to her. They are very efficient working together it has created a great team and Denise has told me she is very happy working wiith AIT. In the end the price evens out and they are still together less expensive than the others, I have checked.

Re: Finding a tax advisor, consultant or accountant

Do you know roughly how much Denise would charge to do a straight-forward Swiss tax return? I see an hourly rate of CHF150- for tax-related matters, but I have no idea how long it takes for a professional to deal with a tax form.

And does she deal with all Kantons (specifically, BL in my case) or just Zurich?

I have asked Denise a couple of fairly complicated tax questions by email, got an answer but never an invoice.

Don't know if she deals with BL, but a quick email to her should do it. Her charge for a straight forward Swiss tax return is around 150.-.
