Living in Switzerland but working remotely from Canada

Hi There,

I'm, not sure if anyone knows more about this, but I am considering a move to Switzerland from Canada, but am unsure how the process would work to keep my same job and work remotely overseas. Does anybody know anything about the following?

• Who would I pay taxes to, Canada or Switzerland?
• As a Swiss citizen (also Canadian citizen), would I be able to live in Switzerland while working a Canadian job remotely?
• Would I need to set up a separate consultancy to make it work?

Any insight into the process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Gee, thanks... That's exactly what I am doing by asking people whom I thought would know. I'm just in the beginning stages of researching this and thought I would reach out to people who may have dealt with the same thing before moving on to other sources.

Re: Living in Switzerland but working remotely from Canada

You would pay taxes here as you would be resident here.

As a Swiss citizen, of course you can live here. Are you registered with a commune and is that the place you intend to move to? If so, then I'd check with the commune/canton officials on the best way to set yourself up here before making the move. If you're thinking of another canton, then check with them as different cantons have different rules sometimes.

Not quite sure how you're going to remotely work in tourism, but I'm sure you do.

Sure, but you could at least do a bit of reading and formulate a hypothesis first eg "Is it correct that I will pay tax in the country Im resident?". People are giving their time for free, and like to see some effort on the other side.

Re: Living in Switzerland but working remotely from Canada

Living and working remote here would be easy for you
since you are Swiss.

The big question is tax. A tax advisor here in Switzerland
might help you organize as to minimize your taxes. It might
be worthwhile to set up your own company in a low tax
Canton such as Zug or Schwyz.

It would also be advisable to contact a Canadian tax
specialist.

I'm fairly certain you'd also be liable for Canadian taxes as you'd be working for a Canadian company and can't be considered "non resident for tax purposes". You'd have to check with the CDN tax authorities to confirm.

Re: Living in Switzerland but working remotely from Canada

- at the very bottom of this thread, appear a list of "relevant threads" quite useful

- another simular question by a Canadian Canada-CH tax treaty
