Two questions deserve to have two answers so
1. On your AHV card that dull grey thing you have, there are boxes in which numbers are stamped. These numbers correspond to the various funds where the AHV money is kept. It will be a number such as 1 for Zurich or 19 for Aargau.
Seeing as you are in Zurich you need to follow this link to get a check on your balance: http://www.svazurich.ch/index/index....nto&sprache=en
You will find the description the online form a non-online form and an example all just for you!

2. How do you withdraw from it. You wait until you are 65 and then they just give you it like magic, every month...

I guess that depends on the law at the time of leaving. As it currently stands this cannot be taken with you.

There is no provision in the EU law to allow netting of state pensions.
Which is probably a good idea because there are one or two (actually 3) countries that are in state pension meltdown as we speak. Worst of all is that two of these funds are the only security for a lot of workers. I am not going to name those countries (You know who you are) but it does not take Einstein to work out that a country cannot provide a pension based on someone starting work at 30 and being entitled to retire on 80% of salary at 50!

If you were thinking of cashing it in then that sort of goes against the grain of Swiss thinking ie providing security in old age and to be honest that is not a bad thing even if you are only 40 with 15 years paid in when you leave...

For 2 - do countries have reciprocal agreements about these payments? And if so, how would one find out which countries do?

Is that only the case for EU countries or does it apply to any country?

Well Lob, that depends on the structure within the country I guess. If you look at the old scenario that the contributions of the young pay for the old, this was fine until people started living longer. If you consider the old saying 3 score years and 10 and went back 30 years that was about what you could expect to achieve. These days it is almost 4 score years and 10... Someone has got to pay for those extra 20 years... So given that contributions from the young are swallowed up by the old which country is going to want to start paying out to the young when they leave to go live elsewhere bearing in mind that there is no guarantee that they will not come back with nothing and be a social case...

I ask that because I know someone who got a lump sum back from them while leaving Switzerland. I believe the condition at that time was a minimum of 18 months contribution.

But the law might have changed.

Re: really stupid question [how to check AHV balance]

I left Switzerland ( back again ! ) the last time after working here for nearly 4 years . I contacted the AHV HQ in Geneva (??) , who sent me a form to fill in and send back with some attachments . They also told me that I would have to live outside of Switzerland ( for me , it was Asia ) for 1 year before they would release the funds . And they did , but it was less than half of total contributions , which was about the amount I paid less admin and tax ... This was in 2003 .

Thanks Shorrick, that was a very informative pamphlet. I particularly like the cartoon on page 16:

Okay most countries... Don't forget this text simplifies the whole things. Apart from the EU there are over 20 other countries with whom Switzerland has an agreement and you can only get a payout IF the country has a reciprocal law allowing payment to people leaving that country for Switzerland which few have. Hence this is a bit of a rarity... But technically I am wrong and you are right.

Re: really stupid question [how to check AHV balance]

I had already posted this on another thread. Please refer to document under the below link.

http://www.avs-ai.ch/Commun/Leaving_Switzerland.pdf

It looks like people are referring to old documents, at least as far as EU/EEA countries are concerned. Since we have the bilateral agreements with the EU, the AVS old-age benefits will also be paid to residents of other countries.

Stealing is a harsh thing to say. Look at it differently:

You pay AHV now which is directly being forward to fund the pension of the over 65s. In return, you are promised that those working when you turn 65 will be funding your pension.

You do pay into your Pensionskasse too though, which is your money and can be withdrawn under certain circumstances (buying a house, going self-employed, until a few years ago also leaving the country but I'm not sure about that now).

Unless someone tells me now I can get my AHV money too in which case I need a link to the form to download, pretty please :-)

I don't believe anyone actually quoted a document pertaining specifically to EU countries...

Which is exactly what everyone is saying...
