Transferring money from Swiss Account to HDFC Account

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced any issues while transferring money from a Swiss Account to HDFC account? It asks for details like SWIFT Code, IBAN number etc. HDFC Bank does not have an IBAN Number, so it is not recognizing the bank. I have tried to chase customer care but had no luck.

Any help is appreciated.

IBAN is the number of your account, should show on your account statements. For the bank´s BIC you can try the BIC online website. If they are not directly connected to SWIFT you have to ask them for their correspondent bank.

HDFC has a Web page of instructions:
http://www.hdfcbank.com/nri_banking/...e_transfer.htm

That aside, banks often have special channels for transferring funds and you have to ask. HSBC gave me a New York ABA routing number to pay money into accounts in other countries.

Of course you don't typically get the best exchange rate from banks unless you are transferring a large sum and ask for the bank's trading desk rather than using their Web site or a branch. (Currency trading firms offer more and better, although they are now being watched by the IRS (and and the NSA!) even as regards transfers that have nothing to do with the USA except, just maybe, passing through the NY Fed or finer-optic cables that the NSA has tapped into.)

The IBAN consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters: first the two-letter country code, then two check digits, and finally a country-specific Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN).
The IBAN is only partly your bank account number, the begining of the IBAN is required from your bank.

HDFC have a London office, maybe they might be of more help.

IBAN codes have only been assigned in Europe and a few other geographic areas, notably not in the USA and evidently not India.

As I said, following a particular bank's instructions one may be able to use a Swiss-based IBAN to transfer funds via a correspondent bank or a local branch. But only your own bank can tell you. Using a London IBAN without specific instructions from one's bank risk having funds automatically converted to pounds and other service charges.

Been there, done that.

There should definitely be options to transfer money without IBAN. Also depending upon ur bank's internet banking facility, you might have search options. I use credit suisse and its great because I just need to type the city and name of the bank and the system can find my bank branch's swift code. Also for the first time transfer, I was cautious and had asked my branch to give the swift number. That was for crosscheck. it works fine.

Re: Transferring money from Swiss Account to HDFC Account

Some good answers here.

I also had to go through a process for transferring money from UBS to HDFC. I called HDFC and told them the story. They said they have the tie-up with HDFC Bank and provided me the details (starting with UBS***). I know you already had interaction with them, but I'll say call them again, tell your bank name and say the currency is 'Swiss Franks'. You should get the right answer.
