Looks like couples do pay more, and there's no indication of the opposite. It's very frustrating.

Married couples do pay slightly more tax if both spouses work and earn over 100k or so. This is generally single digit percentage but ocasionally a little over 10%. The latter case is clearly not legal - but somehow never got fully fixed despite a federal court ruling.

A CVP-sponsored referendum coming up in Feb. is aiming to firmly define in the constitution that this is not allowed. It also sneakily tries to ban gay marriage, which means it may fail. But even if it does, the public is well aware of the topic and not happy about it; the situation probably can't last.

And just by the way, the AHV is a little weird when it comes to this kind of siutation as well. Married couples get less bang for their buck when pensioned off.
