Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

Hi All,

A month ago I started new job in Lausanne and just settling here. Now company is moving to Geneva and I am figuring out what this means to me (with the salary as in Lausanne). Finding an apartment was difficult for me here in Lausanne, now this is new confusion about moving to Geneva (I have one year L permit). It will be great help if someone can give an idea in terms of:
  • Taxation in Lausanne vs Geneva
  • Apartment costs (studio rent for single person, in Lausanne it costs ~ 1050 CHF)
  • Living expenses (food, transportation etc.)
  • Other expenses (like gym etc.)

for single person.

(I have gone through Lausanne vs. Geneva threads on this forum, but I am not that much considering Lausanne nightlife, lively life etc. I don't want to travel too much and prefer living near office/Geneva, not considering living in France)

Thanks,
pk86

If this is not the right place, please move my thread to appropriate category, thanks!

Re: Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

Maybe you can change your location from Germany to Lausanne?

When is the company moving? Usually these moves are planned up to 6 months ahead, so probably no panic yet. The higher rental and general scarcity of apartments in Geneva make moving there very unattractive: can you see a way to commute to Geneva on a daily basis?

Maybe you are lucky here: Finding a replacement tenant

You are not in a good position, and I suggest you only make as few changes as possible, rather than run down to Geneva and start a whole new set of problems. Maybe you can find a new job in Lausanne?

Re: Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

Since you've actually found an appartment in the Lausanne area, and if you're happy with it, you're better off choosing to commute daily. There's something like 5-6 trains an hour to Geneva (include two that don't stop in Renens/Morges/Nyon/etc) at peak time between 7 and 9 in the morning. It's very crowded but it works. You need to check how far the new office is from Geneva Cornavin or Geneva Cointrin (airport) and work it out. Cost of living including taxes and everything is generally cheaper in Lausanne than in Geneva. And the night life is tons better.

Re: Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

The commute from Lausanne to Geneva is quite doable, depending on where you are in Lausanne and where you need to go in Geneva. See if your company will pony up for a General Abonnement for the train and buses. Could be fine.

A friend of mine was just given the option of working in Geneva from a la chaux de fonds beanch of the company. They offered 900 more per month which wouldn't have nearly covered the travel and lost time nor the increase in cost of living had he been willing to move, but Lausanne is a different story. See what you can squeeze out of it, and good luck.

I agree with Mud.
Finding a new home in Geneva is not that easy, unless you've got an interesting salary.

The GA (General abonnement) is a good solution (and you can travel all over the country, which is quite good).

I go to Lausanne on Mondays (for the moment) and it's around 30 minutes.

Try it for some times, and if you really prefer to stay in Geneva ...

Not sure if it's relevant here but if the OP is considering the commuting option he should check whether he's allowed to live and work in different cantons with the permit he has.
He doesn't give his nationality but he has a one year L permit and this may have an effect on where he can actually live.

Re: Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

I hate to break it to you but it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find housing in Geneva. It is no easy feat and you need to get lucky because there's hardly anything good available and everything is very overpriced. If you want to find a decent studio expect to pay at least 1500 fr.

Hopefully the new workplace is close to the train station because it would just be better for you to commute 45 minutes or an hour to work everyday. Many people do it.

I don't know what the differences are in taxation but for a monthly bus/tram pass it costs 60 fr..and food well it's still Coop and Migros. It's cheaper to go over to France and shop in bulk.

And don't forget that many people (including yours truly) work in Geneva and live in Vaud. The cantonal border to Vaud is only 10 km away from Geneva. However the prices even all the way out to Nyon and beyond aren't much less than in Geneva.

Re: Moving from Lausanne to Geneva with the same salary in Lausanne?

Just to share my experience.

I worked 3 years in Geneva. I was lucky to have a family friend who was willing to sublease his studio in the city to me. It was supose to be temporary until I found something. He was getting a bit upset though (and understandably so) that I had not found anything in 3 years. I was looking at ads every day, visiting lots of apartments and filling more applications than I can count. I even widened my search to beyond my means and never got a single apartment.
I then moved to Zurich and found a place within 3 months with less efforts.

I have lots of friends in Geneva area and they all pretty much say that finding a place anywhere between Lausanne and Geneva in impossible without good connections. My suggestion would be to keep your apartment in Lausanne and commute. Or option 2 (I am semi-serious) is that you wait outside a real estate agency and start flirting with an employee. Get in a relationship with one and you will get the keys to an apartment you want.

Good luck to you.
