Changing currency, where to get best rates?

Hello,

I want to get cash in euros, dollars, mexicans pesos, and maybe other currencies. I have my money in Swiss francs. According to your experience, where do you get best rates when exchanging your money in Zürich area?

Or do you think I will get best rates if I withdraw the money from ATM´s in the destination countries or change it there directly?

I have a UBS bank account in Swiss francs. I used to think if I withdraw from my account euros or other currencies (what is possible at the airport branch) I get best rates, but I am not sure any more.

Quantity to change would be like, 2k,3k CHF.

If any tips, tell !

Thank's !

Re: Changing currency, where to get best rates?

For €s: Get a €-account with your bank (free in many cases), change into €s using www.currencyfair.com funding your own €-account, and then withdraw the €s 1:1. (If you want a free €-account incl. free debit card for the €-zone, check out www.dkb.de)

For US$: If you want to exchange cash-CHF for cash-USD I might have some US$ cash leftover soon, so we could meet in Zürich for a live trade at current mean rate without any fees. PM me if this might be an option.

Other currencies: I usually find it a good idea to have local accounts in the country of the currency, but no idea for cash.

Good, I was looking for something without having to open accounts, as I will be moving etc. and will be complicated. Also, do not have much time.

The best rate I get is in Migros Change. They adjust the rate depending on the amount traded, starting from CHF 1'000.

Re: Changing currency, where to get best rates?

Ok, as on the net everyone says Migros gives the best rate, I went there, but only posible to change the money within the machine, and I had bad experiences with machines eating the money or breaking notes so I calculated that changing the money at UBS only made 8 CHF more expensive than migros then I went to UBS and could get euros directly from my account.

Everywhere in the net people say SBB has very high rates. To discover, actually today had the lowest among all banks I checked including migros bank, and they told me there is no comission if you are doing another operation (for instance I charged a prepaid travel cash card). Just in case, SBB rates are rather good

I know only the rates UBS and exchange places at zh bahnhof offer. Not sure how better others are, but why are exchange rates so terrible? Usually in any other country the spread is way smaller....

I can't give you a link, because these are just street exchanges. But for example in Turkey the spread is way better. I go there each 1/2 years and it is always better to do the exchange there.

Even there spread for CHF is higher than for Euro, USD but I guess that's related to more people exchange the later two.

Re: Changing currency, where to get best rates?

I just found that postfinance has the best rate, even better than migros and sbb rate.

https://www.postfinance.ch/en/priv/p...r/wmdmain.html
https://www.migrosbank.ch/de/privatp...dwaehrung.html
http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-service...-exchange.html

There is however a fixed charge of CHF 5.00 for delivery. I worked out the math, it is worth If you are changing chf 500 and above. I am going to change CHF2000 soon and I can about 20 francs if I use postfinance.

Which supports my feeling, that based on my experience, the banks are the LAST PLACE you want to transact anything.........

Re: Changing currency, where to get best rates?

I know this is an old thread, but it's still quite useful !

I wanted to swap 400 CHF for Thai Baht. At Zurich HB (Western Union) they offered me 12,650 BHT. Then I found the following website, which shows how many THB I'd get if I did the transaction once I was in Thailand.

http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx

Compare that 12,650 BHT to how much I'd get in Thailand... It's shocking.

So, if you live in Switzerland and want some foreign currency, wait until you get to your destination, and get your money there if you can !

I completely agree.

The problem is, if you do want a little foreign money before travelling... where else can you get it from in Zurich (without being ripped off this badly !!) ?

I knew that buying in Zurich wouldn't be the cheapest place... but I didn't realise just how bad their exchange rates were !

Western Union are known for being the most expensive, by far

If you want "exotic" currencies take USD or Euro and change when you arrive, well know fact.
