Are you sure it wouldn't be wiser to invest in freshwater aquifers? (after all you can't eat gold)
I take it you've seen Quantum of Solace .

You paint quite an apocalyptic picture JamesK. Are you sure it wouldn't be wiser to invest in freshwater aquifers? (after all you can't eat gold)
I had missed this one...
You cannot invest in freshwater acquifers anymore.
They've already been privatized in a big rush over the end of the last millennium.
What you *should* do is live close to freshwater reserves.
However with global climate volatility this might mean livling somewhere were you can't easily grow any sort of meaningful crops, and therefore you will need to import food. Enter gold, I suppose.
Or own good land before it is all lost to real estate speculation or it is sold off to China :-/

YMMV

Re: Investing in Precious Metal Account

@JamesK:
Where do you have your sources from for the following statement:
"The Swiss franc is in trouble too with huge eastern europe bank loans that the Swiss banks have made - amounting to some 50% of GDP"

Actually i guess if Switzerland will have a problem, the problem in Austria with the most exposed banks could be deadly. I only heard about big problems of polish people with their CHF mortgages....

About the topic
As Macchiato mentioned the ZKB Gold ETF is a good way to invest in CHF. If you want to invest in USD i should prefer and ETC of UBS on the Bloomberg CMCI Gold Index which is unaffected of a contango or backwardation situation in Gold future prices.

People buy gold because of risk-aversion.
Counterparty risk aversion runs sky high these days.
This is The Reason I'd prefer ZKB over UBS, and in any case I'd like to count my pieces rather than have a bookentry parked in someone's server

Just my 2 cents' worth, YMMV
