Missing the Tax Deadline

There is a fair chance that I am going to miss the end of March Steuerklaerung deadline for 2007 due to previous disorganisation and impending holiday.

Anyone know what kind of penalties I will incur sending this through a couple of weeks late. I have already been paying Tax at source.

You can ask them for an extension although I'm not sure what the process is as I ended up folding and gave it all to a tax accountant.

if you are paying tax at source (Quellensteur) you should get away with a rap over the knuckles & no fine. This is my experience in K Bern (6 months late).

Re: Missing the Tax Deadline

Music to my ears on the tax front, was just checking a pile of papers before I leave on holiday tomorrow and there it was staring back at me!

The Tetris is a god given talent - nothing to do with the many years of sat on trains/planes/buses with a gameboy in hand...

Though compared to the amount of time that someone else in the top ten has spent playing Tetris (328 hours and counting....) I am a lightweight.

Re: Missing the Tax Deadline

I suspect they will send you a reminder a couple of weeks after due-date and in that one they will give you 10 days to file.

I think you can still ask for an extention though (normally not possible once you get the reminder). Call them and ask.

Re: Missing the Tax Deadline

There is a small outfit of tax and legal advisors in
Basel. I use them. Their website is at www.gmacg.com. They have a download section, found in the link top right of the home page. There is a - somewhat dated - guide to these matters. I have attached it. It is specific to Basel, though. i expect there are similarities from one canton to the next.

Re: Missing the Tax Deadline

one of my colleagues whose brother is a big cheese in the tax authorities gives us advice. do not delay or ask for a delay as this will eventually get closer scutiny. if you get it in on time at month end with everyone else it is likely to go through without to much examination.
what i wouldlike to see somewhere is a complete list of deducibles one can claim. my Swiss colleague is going to advise me as he seems to claim all sorts of stuff which gets through.

Re: Missing the Tax Deadline

If one is employed by a company and pays tax at source, one has to do "nothing" with the tax returns (Lohnausweis) as I was told by my HR. Can someone comment on this?

If you earn over 120k chf per annum, you have to fill out a Quellensteur Erklarung.
This can work in your favour as I found out, got a nice rebate of 2.5k

If you live in Zurich itself you most probably already have an extension until the end of November. Check your tax forms, front page at the bottom.

If not you can just call the tax office and ask for an extension, it's no problem to get one until the end of November.
