Quellensteuer after job change (in other canton) but no address change

Hi all, I have spent some time looking through the various Quellensteuer threads but am not yet completely clear on what I need to do now in my situation - please excuse my dumbness on such things.

I am on a B-permit paying Quellensteuer. Previously I was living and working in Zurich, but have recently changed for a job in Canton Sank Gallen, commuting each day back to Zurich.

I was always under the impression that the Quellensteuer tariff was based on where you live, so I didn't expect to see a change in the amount deducted from my monthly pay. But it has changed and it says 15% in the first letter (from 9%).

I have seen the letter and I will ask tomorrow, but perhaps you could give me some information before asking.

I hope it's just an error.

Cheers.

Re: Quellensteuer after job change (in other canton) but no address change

Quellensteuer is indeed based on the canton of your residence. However, some employers simply refuse to apply rates of tax other than those of their own canton. Whether this is legally acceptable or not, I don't know, but it does happen. If your new employer refuses to change the tax rate, contact your canton's Steueramt (tax office) and ask them what to do. You may have to wait till the end of the year to request a refund. Note, in cases of incorrect withholding of tax, you can do this even if you don't submit a tax return.

Thank you.

The letter says that I have 10 days if there's an error. And I will clarify it tomorrow. I think that it's just an error, because there are more people living in Zurich and doing the same travel every day... Let's see what they say.

Re: Quellensteuer after job change (in other canton) but no address change

It wasn't an error. They do this for the whole people in the company to simplify the process and I have to do the burocracy at the end of the year to revover the difference.

I don't really know what I have to do at the end of the year... Where should I ask in the gemeinde where I live or in the gemeinde where I work?

Contact tax office of the canton where you live at the end of the year and say you need to complete a tax return and the reasons why. In the meantime, just chill out and pretend you are locking the money up in a savings account for a while.......

Here's what you need to do, based on the actual experience of someone I know who lived in Zürich and worked in Bern:

- Contact the Steueramt of the Canton of Zürich and explain your situation;
- Complete a form (sorry, I don't recall its name) to request a correction of your Quellensteuer (note, this is NOT a tax return; if you need to submit a tax return, do that instead);
- Submit said form after the end of the year but before 31 March;
- Wait about 1.5 years (seriously) for your refund. (Quickest refund was 6 months.)

If you miss the filing deadline, you won't get a refund.

You'll need to do this every year, as long as your employer continues to deduct tax at their own canton's rate.

I wonder what happens when, say, an employer in Schwyz deducts too little Quellensteuer ...

Good luck!

Re: Quellensteuer after job change (in other canton) but no address change

It looks crazy.

The woman from HHRR told me that next year there's a new law that obliges the companies to do this correctly. So this will be the last year that this is legal.

Do I have to do this before the end of the month? I will contact directly with the Steueramt.

Cheers

Did you work at your new place at any part of the tax year just finished(2013)? If so, yes, you need to contact steuramt before end of March. If you only worked there in 2014, then do it after the end of 2014, but before March 2015.

No, I started this year. OK, I won't forget it.
I hope it's not much burocracy. I hate doing their job.

Correct. The deadline is 31 March of the year following the year in which you worked/were paid.
