Paying orange slips with credit cards (to earn points)

There are a couple of really old threads suggesting people couldn't pay mobile phone bills with credit cards.

Can one pay orange slips at the post office with credit card? My CC gets paid in full each month so to me it's essentially a debit card. It has one of these collect points and get prizes schemes with it so it could be a way to get easy points towards some useless thing I don't need.

I've only been to the post office once!! I handed over two letters and and stuck my maestro card in the machine but the nice lady told me cash only.. So I'm kinda guessing same

To be more exact Tom, you mean Postfinance cards linked to a bank account at the Postfinance, or does that include using a Postfinance Visa/Mastercard to pay where one enters the PIN at the post office keypad? Thanks!

It's the same in the UK.. (and I would guess most of western europe).... you can't settle a personal bill from a 3rd party with a credit card because.. basically, you can't settle a debt with a debt (because you're creating a chain of liability)

Oh.. unless you're an international bank.. then you can pay your debts with other people's debts

In some cases you can pay debts with a credit card but normally treated as if you withdrew cash, ie additional high charges which will immediately wipe out any bonuses and end up costing you.

So you can't pay a paper electric bill with a credit card? Why? What's the difference between that and paying it by credit card online?

Not sure if that's true. i know of people in the UK who pay their mortgage by credit card to earn mileage/cashback/use interest free introductory periods.

I can pay my orange telephone bill by credit card without surcharge

Thats an exception to the rule, companies here dont want to lose 2-3% on the credit card fees to let you pay bills (and get a 57% markup instead of 60% )

You cannot use Visa for post office bill payments, even if it is PostFinance Visa card. They will let you use the yellow PF card, or cash. I was wondering about it, too, because of the amount of nice points earned. I wonder if there is any advantage at all in paying online, though.

Re: Paying orange slips with credit cards (to earn points)

IF you can use a Credit Card to pay your bill, THEN you don't need to use the orange slip to pay for it.

You contact the company and tell them that from now on you want to pay by credit card. If they offer that possibility, they will stop sending you orange slips.

But you cannot do both Credit Card and Orange Slip at the same time, they are mutually exclusive.

(For a UK comparison, it's like saying can I use my credit card to pay the direct debit relating to my electricity bill?)

Re: Paying orange slips with credit cards (to earn points)

I would just like the option, I don't want to switch completely to CC or DD. My important bills get paid directly but there are lots of ad-hoc bills that come in or stuff that I might just choose to pay by card to get points.

Last week I had I think six orange slips to pay. car insurance, commune dechet tax, kids swimming lessons, electricity, medical bill and some other insurance.

Choices :
Change them all to direct debit:
No, they are not all recurring except electricity maybe.

Take out a couple of thousand in cash and go pay at the PO:
Seems rather old fashioned plus I get no value add points for doing it.

Pay with online banking:
This is what I did but takes a while typing alll the numbers and again, no value add.

It would have been nice to go to the PO and hand them all over with my CC and look around while the nice lady sorts it all for me. And I get the value add of the points.

The orange slips can really add up to be a pain in the bottom. I've got two kids who go to the doctors together for routine jabs etc. They both went recently and got jabs, one was tested for an alergy and the other got some other routine test.
Anyway this one visit resulted in around 10 orange slips! Their actual doctor bills the insurer direct so that's fine but everything else was broken down, some lab did one test, another lab did something else blah blah yada.. Yeah I get all the money back in a few weeks but still had to sit and pay them all individually.

If you're in Post Finance, use the app and scan them.

Re: Paying orange slips with credit cards (to earn points)

If the problem is the volume, most banks offer USB connected readers where you can scan them into the e-banking avoiding having to type them in.

Otherwise, no option really. Orange slips are often the only way to pay bills here.. old fashioned? Absolutely. But the reason why they are the norm is the extremely low cost (to the company), compared to credit cards.

After all, when you get points on your credit cards, where do you think these are coming from? From the very high fees that card companies charge the businesses for each transaction, ie, you who perhaps paid a higher price so that the shop owner can afford to accept credit cards.
