Re: Have an UNPAID UBS credit card debt of 2000 CHF

I called up UBS credit card center just now and have discussed in detail my situation since a year and they have agreed to freeze the interests and allowed me to pay in August.

I would like to thank everyone on this Forum for their views and tips and I am sincerely grateful to each one of you.

I guess they're just happy to get the debt paid. It would be so easy for the OP just to default. I wonder what would happen if he asked for a discount...

One more thing to consider:

Your paying back will cost you in transfer fees, probably also in terms of exchange rate. Plus, the CHF may get more expensive until August.

Do you have a UBS office in reach (UBS has 23 locations in TX, they certainly have at least one in Singapore)? Perhaps you can arrange to pay in USD, amount fixed now, ideally to be paid back at said UBS branch.

You'll be fine; just pay it in August. No-one will talk with interpol and they probably don't even have a central database so you could even open a UBS account in Singapore and maybe have no issues.

However, you're paying a stupid amount of interest and fees for doing it like this. Ring UBS, explain you're a student on no income and that you will get paid in August. They may agree to freeze further interest payments. If not, consider a short term loan, although in the middle of a move it's unlikely anyone would give you one. You could ask your employer for a salary advance.
Quite. Interpol deal with mass murderers, drug barons and possibly football organisers. Small time debt is not in their remit.

Best thing to do is what Adrian said. Ring them, tell them what your proposal is, ask them to cap the penalties and interest (they might not). Since you are out of Switzerland it is far more economical and easy to reach an agreement rather than hound you for payment. Then stop worrying about it.

I think UBS has bigger worries than 2300k CHF of unpaid credit card debt

Re: Have an UNPAID UBS credit card debt of 2000 CHF

The worst thing the OP can do is nothing.
The second worts thing is waiting.

Pay at the very least the interest amount each month
Otherwise the amount owed will snowball into every increasing amounts

Do not save up until you can pay in one go, but rather send everything you can as soon as you can. The more you can pay now, the less the total debt will be.

Good for you...I'm not surprised. The least thing UBS wants to do is to get into a big mess with a US citizen due to the huge banking fiasco that has carried on in recent years. They would probably prefer to avoid harassing you like the plague!...Good Luck
