number26 [German Online banking]

number26.de is a German current account. It can only be opened with a German address, so ask your friends/sister/aunt to use theirs, if possible.

Usually they want an invite code, which you get only after waiting a few days. With below link it's possible to sign up immediately, but not sure how long this will work.

https://number26.de/ (EDIT: This is not an affiliate link, at least I don't earn or get anything through this! I found this on another forum.)

Rgds, Christian

Re: number26

Is this a good/desirable thing to have? Do we need to have German current accounts?

How is this better than opening an account in the branch of some reputable German bank that people have heard of?

Re: number26

I guess a native EUR-account is sort-of desirable to be able to pay 1:1 throughout the €-zone. For example when shopping in Germany, but also when holidaying Spain, Italy, France or Austria.

Usually DKB is "the next big thing", but they occasionally refuse people. These guys here offer a free MasterCard with the account, which can be used to withdraw and pay, free of charge, worldwide (they advertise to use interbank rates without markup, I didn't test yet). Also they are unlikely to refuse anyone, because it's strictly credit based.

Just wanted to mention the link for immediate account opening. Not sure if these guys are super-desirable, but if all you need is an occasional €-transaction I guess they fit the need quite nicely?

Re: number26

You'd be better using the Central Acquisition Saving House, which I'm happy to administer for you. Just send me a cheque payable to the recipient above and I'll do the rest. In fact, to save time, you don't even need to write it in full - just write the initials. The bank will know what to do with it.

Cheers,

DB

With the moderator having edited my post, this thread is senseless now.

This was never an affiliate link, the link I posted only allowed to sign up immediately as compared to having to wait for a week.

Obviously I´m not even going to try to change it back. PM me if you want it.

I don't get it. If you need a German address in what way is it different from a real German Bank account?

'Zackly my point, above. And if you want a Euro account "to be able to pay 1:1 throughout the €-zone. For example when shopping in Germany, but also when holidaying Spain, Italy, France or Austria", why not open one at a Swiss bank? They all offer them.

Re: number26

OK, sorry, wouldn't have created the thread had I known what happens in here.

It´s just a free account, which the German press has widely covered for being free AND being the first account ever which can be opened completely online within a few minutes of receiving an invite code, which can take up to a week.

I agree, above advantages might not be overwhelming, but that lies in the eye of the beholder.

In other forums I saw people being pretty happy to have the wait shaved off, so I thought it's worth re-posting. Obvisouly I was mistaken. Sorry about that.

May I state that the link I gave definitely wouldn't have given me any advantage. I wouldn't post anything like that.

I do agree it would probably have allowed the bank to track where customers come from, and this would've indicated a totally different forum/website than this one here. I assumed it's still worthwhile because of the no-wait-advantage. But again, I was wrong and sorry about that.

Well if you'd said that in the first place the reactions might have been slightly different.

Is it part of the German Einlagensicherungsfonds? If not, your money could disappear fully when they disappear.

Edit: they are

Re: number26

Number26 has a new feature which I´ve never seen with any bank:
  • You can pay cash into your account at retailer's checkouts (both staffed and unmanned) throughout Germany. Some guy captured the process in a YouTube video (in German):
  • It's also possible to withdraw, but that's the same as "cash back" which is already widely available anyway.
Also, here's an interesting speech by one of the founders of Number26 with WiredUK (in English):

Also a good video comparing Number26 to DKB. In German with English subtitles.

Re: number26

Number26 supports payments in € to SEPA area, no SWIFT. Since Switzerland is a SEPA member country are there any limitations?

Re: number26

I don't have a €-account with a Swiss bank, so I can't test it myself.

If you want to test it and have a Swiss €-account available, let's exchange account numbers and transfer one € to each other.

However, I guess it should work without problems. I already transfered to a UK-based €-account, no problems.

Re: number26

I have one of these accounts, and it is amazing. It is basically an app on the phone, and very easily opened: I did it with an Austrian address.

The best parts are that there is not a cent of fees, and you get immediate notification when you make a purchase or withdrawal with great conversion rates.

Re: number26 [German Online banking]

How can I make a transfer in a foreign currency?

To start with, you can only make transfers within the SEPA region. If you want to make a transfer to an account in a foreign currency within SEPA, this is possible. You simply type in the amount to be transferred in euros.
Transfers in foreign currencies to your NUMBER26 account, however, are not possible yet and will be rejected. Please only transfer Euros to your NUMBER26 account.

Re: number26 [German Online banking]

number26 announced that they are now available to customers residing in France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Slovakia, adding to Germany and Austria which was already the case before.

These are all €-countries.

I wonder if Switzerland is on their roadmap, too. However, given negative interest for CHF, I guess that's unlikely.

Furthermore, they just introduced providing overdraw-facilities. They're turning into a real bank.

At the pace they introduce new features, I guess this is a bank we'll be hearing from!
