Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) opinions?

Hello!

First of all I'd like to introduce myself as this is my first post here. My partner and I are about to move to Basel, since I got a new job there. I've been reading a lot of threads here and it really helped me to understand a lot of aspects of the Swiss life!

After browsing the forum, I realized there is no info on the Basler Kantonalbank (BKB). If anyone is a customer or has any opinion about it is highly appreciated!

Also, I read that almost all the banks (not BKB) use a card reader for the e-finance transactions and I find it a bit annoying! Do they still use it or was it replaced by any other method?

Thank you in advance!

Cris

Re: Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) opinions?

I've been with them for a number of years and have been very satisfied with their customer service and their charges. On request you can also have an english-speaking advisor.

They've gone through a rough period over the last few years with several financial scandals, manipulation of their own share price and taking on US citizens that were clients of UBS. If you are from the US, forget it, they will not open an account for you. They now claim to be whiter than white.

E-banking is carried out via a mobile TAN and password.

Wave, thank you for the info! It was really helpful to know from an actual customer!
Both of us are from the EU, so that shouldn't be an issue in case we opt for KBK.

Thank you again!

I have an account with them.
Their website is very convenient.
I am very satisfied with them. Had my account with UBS earlier and was fed up of their service and service charges. Dont regret my decision to move to Kantonal bank.
Cheers

Re: Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) opinions?

Regretfully, I didn't see this thread earlier to comment myself.

My own experiences with the BKB were not so good as others here.
That said it was some years ago but, nonetheless, here is my story:

In November 1994 I opened a "Vorsorgestiftung-Sparen 3 (Retirement Savings - Third Pillar) account with the BKB. I had moved the funds from a Zurich bank to the BKB so the amount was not small, ie, about CHF 38'000.00. I invested the money in the Prevista Plan that many Kantonal banks operated together. In that plan there were about 8 or 9 different investment groups. Also a part of the Prevista Plan is that one could at a later date change the weighting of the various investment groups as required.
Long story short...
About one year later I tried to change the weighting of the plan with a typed written request. I waited and waited so several weeks later I asked them to send me a written confirmation. Eventually that came and my request had obviously not been acted upon at the time it was sent. Ok, I though, shit can happen.
Roughly another year later I again asked to change the weighting of my retirement plan by registered letter. Again no answer! So I visited the BKB main office in Basel and asked to speak to the gentleman concerned but was told one must make an appointment. That I did for a date a week or so later.
When the time came for my appointment at the main office I was asked to wait to see the Herr. And waited, and waited!
Eventually the young lady from information desk came to me and told me that Mr. Soandso had decided to take that afternoon off and she was very sorry!

I went straight to UBS opened a new Dritte Säule Konto there and at home wrote a letter to BKB terminating my account with them and moving the funds to UBS.

My recommendation: Stay away from the BKB.

Re: Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) opinions?

I wouldn't hugely rate it - refused to open any account for me (wife) that was not ultimately in the name of my husband - so whilst it had my name on the account and cards, all the paperwork was still sent to him and when I had a problem with my bank card being refused, I could not ring up and sort it out - he had to (and that time he was in China so it was not straightforward).

And yes, I do work and have my own income and we are C Permits but none of that is good enough for the Cantonal bank.

Credit Suisse have opened me an account quite happily.

I've used them for a number of years and am very happy with their services. The e-banking system is good and you can do everything in English.

Re: Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) opinions?

Another later reply, but it can be filed in the EF Archives

I'm American, my husband is Swiss. When we moved here, they were thrilled to open an account for my husband and not-so-thrilled to put my name on it. But Dan being Swiss, they took us in. We have been very happy over the last three years with them.

Our only complaint was when looking for a mortgage: it seemed that every time we had to go in to meet with our contact, we had a new one. They couldn't seem to retain their employees to save their life. That being said, everyone we spoke with were very friendly and willing to help. English was not an issue for us (we specified English-speakers each time)-

Banking with them at work, good relationship, good quotes on the FX side. No idea how it is as a private client
